Oh, the luck of the Irish is coming our way! I have a miniscule amount of Irish blood in my white body . . . my Mom’s, Father’s Father’s . . . Father?. I can’t quite remember the lineage, but I know it’s in there somewhere! Along with English and Scottish too . . . as every other white person does 😉
We all can use a bit of luck in our lives, so rather than chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, I’ve decided that looking for a Leprechaun may be more futile. Bahahaha! My Kindergarten kids like looking for Leprechauns, so I’ll let them do it for me.
Making these Leprechaun cupcakes may look complicated to start, but they’re actually quite easy. You will need a lot of buttercream . . . in a few different colours, but once you’ve got everything ready in the bags, it’s smooth sailing from then on. You can set up an assembly line of cupcakes, and pipe each different step one at a time.
I used my Guinness Chocolate cupcakes and Bailey’s buttercream for the bases of these cupcakes. You can find the recipe for both of them here Guinness Chocolate Cupcakes with Bailey’s Buttercream.
You will need orange, green, black, and yellow buttercream’s for decorating. On the cupcakes above, I am using Bailey’s buttercream for the base of the face, and I think it works out perfectly for skin tone (pale Leprechaun!).
Tips needed:
Skin- small open round tip (e.g. Wilton 2-3)
Orange- small star tip tip (e.g. Wilton 16-18)
Green- small open round tip (e.g. Wilton 10-12)
Black- small open round tip (e.g. Wilton 3-5)
Yellow- small open round tip (e.g. Wilton 2-3)
To make the face, the first thing that you will need to do is to create a flat surface with the skin toned buttercream. When I made these, the next thing that I did was pipe the hat, using the green, black and yellow buttercreams. You could do it in any order though. Next, I used the orange for the Leprechaun’s beard and eyebrows. Then I did the mouth and eyes . . . finally, finished off with the nose.
Each one of these looks so different, and I think that gives them personality! They will be perfect to bring to any St Patrick’s Day celebration, or just to make to bring some LUCK!
