Weekend Wonder

January 17, 2011 by Jenn

What a wonderful weekend it was!  Friends, food, laughter, love.

Here in Cranbrook, we have been having crazy weather (yes, I’m onto the weather already in this post).  At the beginning of last week, it was -25 C and by the end of the week, it was +6 C!  What is going on?  The beautiful snow that we got last week is gone . . . melted away to muck and ice.  Not nice.  Hopefully it straitens itself out soon.

The reason I am talking about the weather, is that even though it is crazy right now, I got in an outside run . . . in January!  It was fabulous. . . hard, but great.  It is so much different running outside than on the treadmill.  It just feels better.  Fresh air, sunshine, mud, ice. I went out for about 25 minute run and thoroughly enjoyed myself.  I even stopped in at my parents to say a quick hello . . . but really I just needed a break!  The sun was out and shining beautifully . . . almost bright enough to disguise the muck and mud.

I love being outfitted in outdoor running gear.  I love the layers, I love the gloves and I love that I stay warm the whole time!  Sometimes when we’re out cross country skiing I get a little bit cold.  I definitely don’t have that problem when I’m running!  Sweat, sweat, sweat!

It’s back to the treadmill tomorrow morning!  It will be Monday already?

Here are a couple of pictures I took while on the treadmill in the last couple of weeks.

This was the first time I had to enter my NEW age on the treadmill after my birthday this year. It was weird. I don't know why!

This is my 30 minute run last week! I felt victorious and proud that I finally did one for that long this year!

Stomach Full of Popcorn . . .

December 18, 2010 by Jenn

. . . makes for a very uncomfortable run.  Yuck.  It was like a solid mass in my lower abdomen.  No, it wasn’t from breakfast, it was from the movie last night!  So sick.  As much as it tasted like heaven last night, this morning, it was a bad choice . . . “milk was a bad choice.”  A bad choice and about 8000 calories!  Not really that many, but too many for sure!

I woke up super early this morning (5:45), so excited to be on holidays that I couldn’t sleep in!   So, what did I do?  Researched and read my favourite blogs of course . . . while enjoying a cup of coffee.  It was really unfortunate my coffee tin was empty this morning and the coffee I was enjoying was yesterday’s warmed up in the microwave.  Gross, yet happiness made it delicious . . . it also might have been the French Vanilla Splenda that I added.

After I had had enough (cut myself off) I decided that my holiday resolution had to start today!  RUN. WEIGHTS. Run. Weights. run.  weights. I managed to succeed on day one!  One run down, 17 to go.  Uhhhhh….mmmmmight have to look into that again.

I’m still on the basic run program from 2 weeks ago . . . I have been having such a difficult time getting a run in when work has been going full tilt and I’m continuing to spin up a storm. Excuses, excuses . . . I have none now.

Here’s what I managed to do this morning . . . with my favourite spin routine pumping through my ears.

Minutes 0-5 Warm up at Speed 4.o  (I busted out to Waka Waka by Shakira . . . almost sang out loud I was so into it . . . and no one else was in the gym!)

Min 5 –  Speed 5.0 – pick that pace up to a steady light jog

6 – 5.3

7 – 5.6

8 – 6.0

9 – 6.5

10 – 5.0

Repeat 4 more times until 25 minutes, then pick a steady speed (I did 5.8) to maintain until minute 30.

Enjoy grooving on the treadmill.  Careful not to fall off!  I’ve seen that happen.  Ouch . . . mostly hilarious.

Hitting the Treadmill Day 2

November 11, 2010 by Jenn

I did it!!! I went running TWO freaking days in a row.  I’m very proud.  To be honest, it seemed much easier today…not like 20lbs easier but, I had more energy.  Perhaps I just accepting that this is the way I have to get myself back into better shape.  Whatever the reason, today felt great.  Here’s what I did:

Treadmill [speed changes/intervals…incline is flat (0.0)]

0-3 mins Walking from 4.0 (speed)

4 min – Running at 5.0

5 min – 5.3

6 min – 5.6

7 min – 6.0

8 min – 6.3

9 min – 5.0

10- 14 min – repeat minutes 5- 9

15 min – Walking 4.0

16 min – Running 5.3

17 min – 5.6

18 min – 6.0

19 min – 6.3

20 min – 5.0

21 min – 5.5

22 min – 6.0

23 min – 6.5

24 min – 7.0

25 min – 5.0

Cooldown….Thank goodness that’s over!  The final interval is harder than the first 3 intervals, but the harder you work at the end, the optimal your calorie burn will be.  Have fun with this one….I did. Finally.  Tomorrow I’ll be on to day three.

Hitting the Treadmill

November 10, 2010 by Jenn

I decided today that I needed to start running again. YUCK!  Since I’ve been concentrating on the Cookies and Cupcakes but not the Cardio, I find myself carrying a few too many pounds.  My too-tight pants don’t lie…neither does the jiggle, jiggle when my stomach hangs over the waistband!!!  Am I grossing you out yet?

“Don’t you teach spinning?” you ask?  Well, yes, but as you might have discovered yourself, your body becomes accustomed to doing a regular activity.  I may spin 3-4 times a week, which sounds like a lot, but my body is used to that exercise, so it pretty much just goes through the motions.  It gets bored!  Of course you can start to push yourself even further and harder….and that is the change that you need to make if you have reached this plateau.  Try something new…try your same activity at a new pace, with new resistance.  I decided that for me to kick my body back into muscle building, fat losing mode, I would start running again.

I packed my gym stuff this morning (so I wouldn’t have a reason to come home and find the couch) and headed to the gym after school today.   Here is how I started:

Treadmill (speed changes/intervals…incline is flat)

0-4 mins walking from 3.0-4.0 (speed)

5 min – Running at 5.0

6 min – 5.3

7 min – 5.6

8 min – 6.0

9 min – Walking 4.0

10 min – Running 5.0

Etc.

Repeat this cycle 3 more times…your last walk should start at minute 25.

It, sadly, was difficult for me.  I used to do these sets between 6.5-8.0…..and I am determined to get there again.  If nothing else, I have to do it so I have something to blog about.   It hurts in the moment, but boy does it feel good when it’s over.
