How to Make a Coke Bottle Cake

March 22, 2016 by Jenn

Today I am showing you how to make a Coke Cake! The cake is flavoured with Coca-Cola, and then shaped into an actual Coke bottle!

I had so much fun making this cake! The idea first came to me when my dad asked me if I could make him a cake for a special meeting he was attending. I won’t bore you will the details, but it was a political party gathering and the idea of Orange Crush immediately came to mind. If you’re Canadian, you totally know what I am talking about. I first practiced this cake as an Orange Crush cake, so I know that the idea can be used for whichever kind of pop (aka soda) you want to emulate the most.

Be very careful when cutting the plastic on the bottle. I managed to avoid any bodily harm, only due to Paul’s insistence that I won’t be able to film videos if I’m missing a finger! That pretty much scared me safe. It’s easiest if you are using a fresh blade of an exacto knife or something similar. The opening you cut in the bottle once you have drained the cola out needs to be big enough to fit your hand inside. I tried to cheat a bit and make the hole smaller, but it doesn’t work!

The other big piece of advice I can give you while making this cake is to NOT drop the bottle before you get it filled with buttercream and cake. Well, pretty much don’t any cake anytime you’re making one, but it’s especially bad in case because your hard work at layering chocolate will shatter. And then you’ll have to figure out how to get the chocolate out of the hole you made. And then you’ll have to remelt the chocolate and start your re-coating process again. Not that I would know anything about that. Nah.

The coca cola cake itself is quite tasty, but sort of sticky, which is why I recommend coating your pan in cocoa powder before baking it in the oven. I don’t usually do this step for my cakes, but I also don’t usually have a cup of Coke in them either. When I was practicing, the cake stuck to the pan, even in the areas that had been well sprayed with non-stick spray.

Coca Cola Cake (Coke Cake)

Ingredients:
-1 cup (240 mL) Coca Cola
-1/2 cup (120 mL) vegetable oil
-1/2 cup (120 grams) butter
-3 Tablespoons (21 grams) cocoa
-2 cups (400 grams) sugar
-2 cups (240 grams) flour
-1 teaspoon baking soda
-1/2 teaspoon (2.5 grams) salt
-2 eggs
-1/2 cup (120 mL) buttermilk
-1 teaspoon (5 mL) vanilla

Coca Cola Bottle Cake

Procedure:
1. Preheat oven to 350F.
2. In a saucepan, mix Coca Cola, oil, butter and cocoa and bring to a boil.
3. In a stand mixer bowl, combine the sugar, flour, baking soda and 4. Pour the boiled Cola mixture into the flour mixture and mix well on medium low speed.
5. Add the eggs, buttermilk, soda and vanilla and continue to beat well.
6. Pour mixture into a greased and cocoa-ed 13″ x 9″ baking pan and bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
7. Cool and slice in 1″- 2″ slices for freezing.
8.Freeze slices until frozen solid.

Coke Cake

Procedure:
1. Remove label and liquid from bottle.

3. Coat the inside of the bottle with 2-3 layers of chocolate. Allow to harden in between each layer.
4. Once chocolate has hardened, coat inside in buttercream.
5. Place cake slices into the bottle, and add more buttercream. Continue adding cake and buttercream until the bottle is full.
6.To fill the opening, cover with additional melted chocolate and allow to harden.
7.To remove cake from the plastic, use a sharp knife to slice and remove it carefully by segments.
8. To reattach the label and lid, “glue” it on with melted chocolate
9. Serve cake when desired. Store in the fridge. Cake is best consumed within 2-3 days.

I just made this cake to use up left over frosting and cake. I’m so excited how this came out. Of course, the first one is usually the roughest, but now that I know what to do, I will make this again. Thanks so much for the tutorial!

I’m making this today for my brother’s birthday tomorrow. He’s a huge Coke fan. Am I supposed to have half of the cake left over? Maybe I made the chocolate shell too thick? I smushed as much as I could into the inside of the bottle, but I still have half the cake left in the pan. I frosted it and set it to the side to use as a backup in case I mess this up before I’m done. Instead of reusing the wrapper, I’m a graphic designer and I retypeset the wrapper to include a Happy Birthday message and am going to print it out on edible paper, using edible ink cartridges I bought on Amazon. If it works, the whole cake will be edible. (I printed one out on regular glossy paper as a backup, always the Boy Scout – be prepared.) Lol

Hey Jenn! Great work but how long do I have to freeze the cake? And does he has to be frozen when i put it in or should he already be a little soft? And can i make a simple chocolate cake to Put it in? Hope for an answer:)

You want it to be hard so that you can press it into the bottle properly. It takes a couple of hours to freeze completely. You can put whatever you want on the inside.

How is the best way to handle the chocolate bottle when you are trying to get the plastic bottle off?
    Thanks

    • Jenn says
      July 20, 2016 at 4:46 am

If you have chocolate gloves, try those, if not, limit your handling of it as much as you can and don’t hold it for long periods of time.

do you think it was more than 500g chocolate?

How did you get the bottle not to distort when pouring hot chocolate inside??

    • Jenn says
      May 18, 2016 at 5:11 am

The chocolate doesn’t need to be hot, just warm and liquid. The hotter it is, the weirder it works (in my opinion) so I try to keep it warmed only.

You need lots…sorry but I can’t give you a more precise answer. It also depends on how many coats you put inside the bottle.

Hi Jenn, could we use whipped cream instead of buttercream? Do you think it would affect the chocolate shell by making it soft?

    • Jenn says
      April 14, 2016 at 5:48 am

It won’t affect the shell at all…the chocolate should be really hard before you put anything in it.

    Hi Jenn,
Approx. how many people would one cake serve? I’ve been asked to make this for a 50th birthday where there will be about 50 people. Any idea?
    Thanks!

    • Jenn says
      April 11, 2016 at 5:21 pm

I’d say it would serve 10-12 people.

I received this recipe from my niece, Missa, who knows my husband was a Coca-Cola collector, with 23 years of collecting. He passed away 3 weeks ago battling liver cancer. Brought tears to my eyes. I always wanted to make him a Coca Cola candle which flopped. Never thought of a Cake in a Bottle! And it looks like the real thing!
This is incredibly awesome! I will have to try it out. I know someone asked about using ice cream instead of buttercream frosting. I make my frosting folding in whipped creme. Think I’ll give it a try!
Can’t wait to get going on it!!!

    Hi Jenn,

This looks wonderful! I’m wondering if I could do this with softened ice cream rather than butter cram. Do you think it would still work? A bit too much buttercream for me.

    • Jenn says
      March 29, 2016 at 11:43 pm

    Hey Jenn,

Do you let the Coke get flat before you add it to the sauce pan?

    • Jenn says
      March 26, 2016 at 7:36 pm

No I didn’t….didn’t even think about it to be honest. It works fine carbonated.
