Shopkins Cake- How to make Shopkins “Wishes” Birthday Cake

September 15, 2015 by Jenn
In this tutorial I show you how to make the popular children’s toy birthday cake named “Wishes” from Shopkins!  Wishes is the adorable cake shaped character from Season 1 and is ultra rare.  She’s really easy to make as a cake if you follow my tutorial!

Subscribe to my YouTube channel here!

Shopkins are the cutest things that I’ve ever laid eyes on.  How could these mini characters not tease you to collect, trade and share them?  Each Shopkins character has a name, hobby, hang out and BFF, intended to create an emotional bond for the collector (Wikipedia).  Wishes’ favourite hobby is singing, her BFF is Soda Pops, and she likes to hang out in the party aisle.

Making this cake is very straight forward.  You don’t need any tricks up your sleeve to make Wishes.  My favourite part is the melted buttercream top.  I’ve tried in the past to make a dripping-like icing top with fondant, and didn’t really like it.  So thinking of the technique I used in my Melted Candle Rainbow Cake, I knew that I could melt the buttercream, then pour it on top of the cake, and gently work it over the edge for the dripping appearance.

The actual Shopkins toy is considered “Ultra Rare” and is difficult to find.  If you happen to have one, consider yourself lucky!  I searched all over town to find a real life example of Wishes.  They are apparently sold at Target (but we don’t have that anymore obviously), and WalMart, but there were no Shopkin’s found there.  I ended up finding some sets of the toys in the local mall, in a store like an “As Seen On TV” store, but no Wishes.

 Ingredients:
  • 6″ round cake covered in yellow buttercream
  • White buttercream fitted with number 4/5/or 6 tip
  • Black buttercream fitted with number 4/5/or 6 tip
  • Pink buttercream fitted with number 4/5/or 6 tip

Shopkins Birthday Cake

Procedure:
  1. Prepare and cover cake in yellow buttercream.
  2. Measure 2.5″ from the bottom of the cake, up the side and mark with a toothpick. Repeat all around the cake.  Join marks with a line.
  3. With the white buttercream, pipe a rope border around the cake at the 2.5″ line by piping upside down “C’s”.  Repeat all the way around the cake.
  4. Using a small round cutter, press a half circle into the cake, for the eyes (or freehand it). Trace line with black buttercream.  Add one eyelash at the end of the eye line.
  5. Using the pink buttercream with a 4/5/6 tip, pipe on a nose, and mouth.
  6. Place 1 cup of pink buttercream into a microwavable safe bowl and cook in 15 second intervals until melted.
  7. Pour melted buttercream onto the top of the cake, and gently push small amounts of the icing over side of the cake.
  8. Using the yellow buttercream with the number 10 tip, pipe small cupcake topping like swirls around the outer edge of the top of the cake (6-8 of them).
  9. Place blue Mike and Ike’s on the top of the cake for sprinkles.
  10. Place candles in cake prior to serving.
  11. Store the cake in a sealed container in the fridge and it is best consumed within 2-3 days.

How well does the melted butter cream stand up to being outside?

    Hi Jenn!
I absolutely love your videos! I made the minecraft cake for my sons birthday and am now making Wishes for my daughters birthday. I only have a Fat Daddios 6″X3″ pan with the removable bottom, will that work with this or should I buy another pan?

The yellow frosting did you melt that like the pink frosting before you put it on the cake

My friend asked me to make a cake for her daughter’s birthday. And she wants me to make her cake on the same day. Can I leave the cake in the fridge for 2-3 hours instead?

That’s quite the request. I would make the cake the day before so if something happens, you have time to fix it. But, yes you can make it the day of and keep it in the fridge until needed.

Hello, I want to try and make this cake. But I don’t see a recipe for the pink and yellow buttercream. Do you have a video? Or recipe? Thank you

    Hello;
I love this tutorial. I’m going to do it for my daughter’s birthday. Could I use your vanilla buttercream recipe to obtain the melted effect that you did?
    Thank you!! 🙂

    hi

Just wondering what colour you used to get that vibrant pink for the top? I am using Wilton colours but my pink never turns out like that one. Thanks.

I use Americolor gel paste for that exact reason

        Hi Jenn,
Fantastic cake! I was going to use white chocolate ganache (tinted pink), but I love your buttercream idea. Which color of Americolor gel did you use for the pink? I apologize if you have answered this, but I do not see the specific name.
        Thank you!

What’s the secret with melting the butter cream? No matter what I try the butter seperate from it

    • Jenn says
      January 23, 2016 at 10:43 pm

I don’t have a secret. If you are using my buttercream recipe, you should be having the same results as me. If you’re using a different frosting, then I can’t help you out as I don’t work with it.

I’m going to make this cake for my niece’s birthday. I don’t have any 6″ cake pans. What brand do you use? Thanks!

      October 28, 2015 at 5:07 am

I use wilton and fat daddio’s pans usually.

Hi there – I’m wondering a few things about this recipe – my daughter watches your channel and has requested it for her birthday party this weekend 🙂 First of all, how many cups of buttercream in total will I need? Second, did you make two 6 inch round cakes? Thanks so much. Wish me luck. Hehe.

Hi there….the amount of buttercream depends on how thick you put it on the cake. One batch of cake batter (or box mix) makes enough batter to fill 2 6″ cake pans. I used 2 layers.
