For a while now, I’ve been trying to figure out how to combine our hiking adventures, and my love for baking into something that was more fluid. I’ve been doing cardio posts, spin routines, and outdoor activities for a while, but it seemed kind of disjointed, and without flow.
Well, Paul, being the internet guru that he is, found the perfect product for us! BEMCO’s Backpacker Oven! I do not claim to be an outdoor survivalist, or even know what half the gear I carry in my backpack does (Paul does, and I just carry it because he tells me to!), but this oven . . . I know what to do with it!! I love it. The first time we sat down, at the top of a mountain, on a cold, grey day and I got to bite into a warm muffin, was the best hiking event ever!
Setting up the oven is simple . . . if I can do it, you can do it. I only had to practice one time off camera to get it! That’s how easy it is 🙂 Everything folds up to be super compact and easy to get into a backpack. Ladies, make your man carry it! I do. Thanks Paul!
Choosing a stove is where it gets a little trickier . . . I’m talking to the baking at home people here, not the “I’ve backpacked for 50 years people” . . . because you probably already know this. We use MSR’s WhisperLite Universal Stove, and the reason we do that is because you can use pretty much any kind of fuel in it, and the burner is not attached directly to the fuel source. Why do you not want the burner attached to the fuel source you ask? Because you would BLOW UP your muffins!! And after all that work of hauling everything in on your back–what a waste!!
So we’re going to be doing a series of videos on goodies that can be baked in this oven, so stay tuned and subscribed on our YouTube channel.
I can’t wait . . . to eat . . . at the top of a mountain! It makes the hard work up the hill so worthwhile! And if I’m not food motivated (like my dog) I don’t know what I am!?
I like seeing your baking ideas for backpacking, but if they are going to be true hiking recipes you to delete the liquid (less wt) till you arrive at camp. For example your trail mix muffin recipe should have all the dry ingredients in on zip lock, and powdered eggs, butter and milk, plus banana bark in another. At camp add water to wet items and let bananas rehydrate. For a short hike or truck camping the wt doesn’t matter, but longer hikes every oz counts. Love to see vids and recipes on that. This year was my first year of attempting cornbread, bread, and pizza. Still learning how powder eggs, milk ECT effects the cooking process. Any way thanks for the demo and the idea.
We did that in our Pineapple Upside down cake…used milk and egg subs as it was an overnight backpacking trip. The other trips are a couple of hours and we’re not worried about weight.
