Construction Cake

There comes a time in Canada when the roads are impassible!

In the winter it’s often due to the weather . . . snow, ice, sleet, you name it.  Usually it’s pretty nasty to be driving long distances during . . . October to . . . uhhh, about May! 

In the summer, impassibility is often due to the dreaded road construction!  When I used to live in Victoria (on Vancouver Island), and drive back in the summer for holidays, it would be pure torture to be in my non-air conditioned, 1986 Honda Accord, in 30 C weather, on black asphalt , trapped along with the 100 other campers, trailers and semi’s along Highway 3 . . . at a dead standstill while the crews laid more asphalt, or dug out new roads.   

Doing this cake for a special little 5 year old (who will be in my Kindergarten class next year) reminded me of these days spent in the heat. 

Thankfully, this one had no heat or stinky asphalt to contend with!  

It was all sugar and sweetness! 

Construction Cake

This cake was a fun one to make.  The cake itself was chocolate with a chocolate buttercream coating it.  We used cake scraps/crumbs from the hole in the side of the cake to act as the dirt that the trucks are moving about and digging with.  We also put a little bit of Oreo cookie crumbs and graham cracker crumbs to make it look more realistic. 

The orange pylon cones are fondant constructed and the ones on the board are hand cut out.  The rocks are the chocolate coated ones that you can find at pretty much any candy store.  I shaped the 3D cones that are on the top of the cake by cutting out small circles for the bases and rolling a small ball of fondant until it was cylindrical in shape.  I used gum glue adhesive to glue the two pieces together.  

The road is black fondant, and I used white buttercream to hand pipe the lines on the road. 

The digger and dumper were provided by the client and I think she got them at W** M*** for $5!  They actually turned out perfect for this cake, as they are pretty light.  I don’t think they would stand up to the abuse that a 5 year old boy would put them under though!  Our client donated the toys back to us, so we can use them again.  **Remember if you are putting toys onto your cakes to make sure to wash them before they go on!
