No, it is NOT too early to post about Valentine’s Day cupcakes! I went into good ‘0le WalMart yesterday (sorry Dad if you’re reading this . . . pretend you didn’t hear that! . . . he doesn’t go to WalMart as they’re non-union) and the shelves are already FULL of pink, red and white chocolates, marshmallows and candies! If you want to argue with me about it being too soon, don’t bother, take it up with the huge box stores! I’m just a little minion, following in their wake 😉
But in all seriousness, Valentine’s Day is extra special to us, as it is the first time we ever had orders come in for JJ’s Custom Cakery! You could say that Valentine’s Day is how it all got started. What were you expecting I say? It’s when Paul and I declared our LOVE for each other?? Hahaha! Nope! BUT, it WAS when the LOVE of our business sealed us together, forever! That has to be romantic on some level?
One year ago around now . . . actually, I think it might have been a bit closer to the day of <3, I decided to send out an email to people in my contacts to see if they would be interested in Valentine’s Day cupcakes . . . big and mini! I got 16 responses back and ended up making more cupcakes (at that point) than I had ever made in my life! If I hadn’t have taken that leap, I don’t think me, we or the business would be where we are right now . . . which is a pretty good place . . . for me, we and JJ’s!
Over the last year, we have really started to focus on How-To videos on YouTube, and are loving making them . . . as challenging as it can be at times! I find that it is a natural jump from my day job (teaching) to my night job (baking). It is a way for me to combine the two universes and find success at both! It’s been difficult, it ain’t no walk in the park people, but it is working for us.
Making these Valentine’s Day Cupcakes is a simple, yet elegant way to jazz up any party that you might be going to! It is also an activity that you could easily do with your kids . . . if you have the patience!
How to Make Valentine’s Day Cupcakes
What you Need:
- Cupcakes
- Heart Shaped cutter, smaller in size than the top of your cupcake
- A knife
- Coloured pink/red icing
- Icing Sugar
What You Do:
Prepare your cupcakes in whatever fashion you so choose . . . if you have lots of time, follow our videos on how to make a vanilla cake from scratch, or if you’re busy, you can always use a mix from a box.
Once the cupcakes are baked and cooled, using a knife, cut off the tops. Once the tops are off the cupcakes, spread the icing onto the bottom half of the cupcake, making sure to stay away from the edge for clean lines when you put the tops back on.
Take your heart shaped cutter, and cut-out a piece of the cupcake top . . . and save them for later. Sprinkle your cupcake top, and heart piece with icing sugar, and put the cupcake back together again!
Using a small bit of icing, attach the cut-out heart to the top of your cupcake.
Next . . . the greatest part! EAT THEM! But first bring them around your neighbourhood so all of your friends can “Ooooh” and “Awhhhh”.
