Ladies? Where are your orders? A tank cake and an Xbox Remote Cake.

May 3, 2011 by Jenn

Please, please, please, help me out and place an order for a GIRLY cake!  My estrogen is begging you!

German Tiger Tank.  Uggh.  Do I need to say more?  I made this cake EXTRA difficult for us, as we were working with a new brand of fondant.  I figured, that fondant, is fondant, is fondant, but that was a ROOKIE mistake!  This specific brand of fondant is really soft, and was quite difficult to work with.  Paul has spent hours researching how to make fondant harder, and we think we have found the secret!  I will post a fondant comparison and fondant hardener review soon!

XBox Remote Cake

This cake was done specially for a local birthday boy!  His order was very specific, and knew exactly what colours, shape and type of cake he wanted!  He even had to poll his friends, to find out which flavour his friends would enjoy most during the celebration!  How cute, eh?  He (and his friends) ended up choosing Cookie Dough (GREAT choice boys!), and from there, the specifics were up to us!

I started by baking two 8″ round cakes to form the general shape for the remote.  Then Paul, and the carving knife, took over (while I went to Tier Cake Class) and he shaped the cake into what you see.  He then diligently started working on the pieces of the controller, while I started working on the fondant cover.

We have been having fondant issues of late, and this time, the red fondant was quite dry!  I worked with this problem by putting it in the microwave for 10 seconds (seriously!) and added vegetable shortening for more moisture.  Working with the red in this way was much better, but while making the stripes to lay over the black, they dried much quicker, and you can see some of the breakage along the sides (if you look carefully . . . so don’t).

To make the tiger stripe overlay, roll out your base colour, cut out your stripes and your accent colour, and lay stripes over top of your base.  Use your rolling pin to blend the two colours, and viola!  You get one solid sheet of striped fondant!

Spring into PLAYOFFS! Vancouver Canucks Hockey Cake!

May 2, 2011 by Jenn

It’s hockey playoff time folks!

Can you feel the excitement?

Ya, neither can I!

I just don’t.

I apologize to my brother, who has to live in the US where there isn’t enough hockey coverage (or at least as much as he thinks there should be), I apologize to my family, as I was bred into a hockey loving group, and I apologize to myself, as I promised I would jump on the bandwagon!   Who is proud to be a wannabe bandwagon jumper?  L.O.S.E.R.

I just couldn’t be bothered.  The bandwagon went too quickly by my place, and I missed jumping on.

Oh well.  There’s always next game right?  Next round, next series, next year?

When is that next game anyway? Someone’s going to have to help me out!

I have been successful at entering my school’s hockey pool though!  I put a lot (*cough* a-hem) of thought into my picks, and relied heavily on my deep, insightful choices (*cough* a-hem) . . . I randomly chose with the alphabet’s help!  A- Alexander Ovechkin, B- Kevin Bieksa etc.  Aren’t I clever?  I hope for my sake, and everyone else’s who actually chose their players with real rationale thought, that I don’t win, or even get close to winning!

Vancouver Canucks Hockey Cake:

Vancouver Canucks Cake

This cake was a customized cake done for a loyal customer for her husband’s surprise birthday party!  I hear he loved it . . . doesn’t every Canadian male want to see their name on the back of an NHL hockey jersey?  It was a biggie . . . chocolate cake, with chocolate buttercream covering the cake, and vanilla buttercream for the piping design.

I love doing these kind of piping cakes.  I love the order to it, I love the rigid lines, and I love to watch the picture/pattern slowly develop as I get into the piping groove.

What I don’t love is the cramp in my hand that I get!  You have to get your icing at the perfect consistency: not so soft, that it doesn’t maintain it’s shape, but that it is not so hard, that it makes piping difficult on your hand and forearm.

I like to test the icing when it is in the bowl still.  If you put a knife into the bowl, and wiggle the bowl around, you can tell how stiff your consistency is.  If the knife slowly wobbles as you wiggle the bowl, you most likely have medium consistency, and if the knife stays stuck, you probably have yourself some pretty stiff icing!  For a piping cake like this one, you want medium consistency.

Happy piping hockey fans!

And, hey, if you see that bandwagon anywhere, and there’s still room for me, send it on over to my new address.  Thanks!

Cricut Cake

May 2, 2011 by Jenn

I am now the proud owner of a Cricut Cake!  I ordered it and got a stinking good deal on Ebay from a fellow out of Vancouver . . . $230 if you can believe it!
It got here within a couple of days, and I decided to make a vlog out of it!

Making and Baking Cakes- Camping Cake . . . and a hospital gown

May 2, 2011 by Jenn

One good thing that being confined to the couch allows time for?  BLOGGING!  YAY!  Finally, a chance to catch up on my cyberstalking….here come the back links people, and a chance to fill everyone in on what I have been doing lately (in case you don’t follow us on Facebook, head on over there now!)  I find it easy to throw up a couple of new cake pictures on FB, but want to take the time to blog here at CCC.

I am faced with the gift of time over the next couple of weeks while my body recovers from internal jabbing and poking and cutting!

—–Warning: Cutting to Hospital picture—- The booties aren’t in the picture!

—–Move on from hospital picture—–no one needs to see anymore of THAT!  Gross.

First up on the Man cake Marathon of Posts: CAMPING CAKE!  (prior to hospital visit obviously!)

We have done quite a few of these “manly” themed cakes of late  . . . Monster Trucks, 3D Truck, Hunting Camoflauge Cake, and  these are the cakes where Paul gets to shine . . . there is immense attention to detail required for these cakes to look (and taste) amazing!  He is incredibly detail oriented, and really challenges me to be on the top of my game when caking.

Here is one that we worked on together, and it was really fun, because we both LOVE to go camping!  This cake was an 9×13″ sheet, chocolate cake, with salted caramel buttercream.

The tent is made out of carved cereal treats, and then covered in fondant.  The trees are also made out of cereal treats and then I piped with a small star tip, the branches.  They got a little bit heavy, so make sure that you reinforce your trees, so they don’t start to fall over like one of ours started to.

Can you see the little fondant man roasting a marshmallow?  So cute, eh?  I think that fire might be a little hot for that little ‘mallow though!  The stream/river flowing through the campsite is a blue buttercream based, topped with a little bit of blue piping gel layered on top.

In this picture, I LOVE the axe on the wood pile!  Paul literally whittled pretzel sticks into little mini logs to make a pile, and to put in the fire.  The rocks lining the stream are chocolate covered rock candies.

Fortunate Friday

April 30, 2011 by Jenn

Today, I am very fortunate that my surgery to remove my gallbladder went successfully!  Obviously, the need to blog is still kicking . . . they didn’t cut that out, but I am still a little groggy!  I asked the Doc to see my stone, but apparently it is considered a “biohazard” . . . ewe!  Everyone that helped me today was incredibly kind, and caring . . . and patient with my multitude of questions!  I am very impressed with all of the Doctors and Nurses in the Cranbrook Hospital . . . if you happen to be reading this, I sincerely mean it!

Here is a funny story from the morning . . . well, possibly not funny to you, but it was to me and Paul!  When I got into the hospital, they sent me to Day Surgery, where I was given my robes, booties, hat and told to get undressed.  Like, completely!  I had to go commando!  Ewe!  Anyway, just as I was about to get nekkid, the first nurse I dealt with, told me that I had to go to the lab to get a PREGNANCY TEST!  “WHAT!?!” was basically my response.  Apparently, being terrified in the hospital, waiting to get my gut cut open wasn’t enough excitement for one day, that the ante had to be upped with the ole “P” word.  So, I waddled down to the lab, peed in the cup (which the next nurse grabbed with her bare hands . . . thank god I washed the outside off!), and spent the next couple of minutes worrying about the worse case scenario (which you know I do very well!).  If I’m pregnant, I can’t have my surgery.  I’ve been waiting since last summer for this surgery, and a baby will mess it up!  If I’m pregnant, I’ll have a baby. Oh dear.  To lighten my worry, I texted my dad “In hospital, waiting for pregnancy test results”.  I knew that would shock him, and it made me laugh.  I was a little disturbed when he wrote back “hee hee”.  Anyway, the results came back negative, so the surgery was a go.

They called me in an hour early, which was great to get it over with, but I didn’t get my trashy present magazines read!  I needed to read about Will and Kate!  I missed those mags . . . People, US Weekly, Hello! Canada, Marie Claire, Martha Stewart Living.  It was my New Years Resolution to stop reading and buying magazines, but come on, a surgery is a fairly decent excuse to break the resolution.

The thing that I am most fortunate for today is Paul who faithfully waited by my side the entire day, and is still here now, working away on his laptop.  Thank you Paul, I can’t thank you enough.  My family and friends have also been great, and I appreciate all of the well wishes and sending of thoughts.  It takes a great person to take 3 seconds out of their day to remember what is going on in someone else’s life.  Seriously!  Sometimes we get caught up in all of our own stuff, that we forget about others.  I have been very humbled by the number of people who sent me good thoughts . . . thank you friends!

Fortunate Friday

April 23, 2011 by Jenn

Let’s get going . . . I only have 40 more minutes while it’s still Friday!

I am fortunate for the gift of time.  The long weekend started today and it has been a great start so far!  We have been working hard all day, making cupcakes, cakes and doing a bridal consultation . . . and packing!  Moving is such a hassle!

I am fortunate that neither Paul, nor I killed each other last night, as we worked on our latest cake until 3:00.  In the A.M!  Good lord that was a long, tough one, but our customer was happy, and that’s all that matters!

I am fortunate that tomorrow my mom and Paul are coming to help me pack up my stuff.  I seriously was starting to hyperventilate when I was thinking about moving.  You never know how much stuff you actually have until it all has to fit into boxes!  I’m living in a 500 square foot loft, and we’ve already taken three truck loads to Paul’s basement, and I’m calling in reinforcements tomorrow!

I am fortunate to have had the baking bug this week, and made two new recipes . . . Chocolate Cadbury Creme Egg Cupcake, and a Mocha Cupcake.  Both of them are so delicious!

I am fortunate that we live in a country where we have a thing called “Pitch In” and people actually care that it is Earth Day today.  We had the kids at school, picking up garbage in and around the school grounds.  It was great to see, and hopefully we kick the litter-bug problem sometime soon.  My dad used to blow up a HUGE Earth Day ball, and roll it around the EK10K route with the kids in his class.  Why don’t we do those kind of things anymore?

Happy Earth Day!

Pride and Joy

April 20, 2011 by Jenn

My pride and joy is my blog and baking.  Some may say children are supposed to be, but I get my fulfillment teaching others’ children.  I don’t know how my parents did it . . . raising children and teaching!  One or the other, please.  RIght now, it looks like it’s teaching . . . and blogging and baking!

I have totally been neglecting my blog in the last couple of months, and haven’t been able to tell as many stories as I like to . . . or as many cardio posts (hmm, I think I have mentioned that a number of times!)   I think of CCC as a way to express how I’m feeling at any given moment,  what is going on in my world, or the latest recipe I stumbled upon and recreated.  I am leading a very busy life at the moment, but one of my friends pointed out on the weekend that I “function very well when scheduled”.  She was right, but of course it’s all within reason.  Who needs sleep!?!

I love schedules.  If I could be a professional scheduler, I would be!  What has been difficult as of late, has been learning to schedule a NEW responsibility into my already busy schedule . . . JJ’s Custom Cakery.  Obviously (to everyone else) I am going to need to give up some of my “jobs”, but that is a hard pill to swallow for someone obsessed with scheduling.

My gut reaction to fight this sensible notion of “giving something up” and replace it with “NO, I CAN DO IT ALL!”  but, I’m learning I can’t.  Emotionally it leads to breakdowns, it leads to lack of sleep, it leads to a poor memory (which I kind of need for teaching and baking . . . baking powder does NOT do the same work that baking soda does!) and it leads to a complete lack of a social life (thank god Paul is liking caking).  I can’t forget to mention how “doing it all” severely affects my TV watching schedule!  Oh the shame, the shame.

As I set out in this next journey with a new business, I am so excited to see what lays ahead.  Scared at the same time, but excited about what might be.  Everyday a new opportunity may come my way, and  new excitement can begin to build, one order at a time.

Monster Truck Cake

April 19, 2011 by Jenn

This blog should now be called the “Ode to Paul’s Decorating Skills”.  And I mean cakes . . . ’cause I just have to say, thank god I am there to shop for him!  “Lo0-boo-who?”

He is getting so good . . . at boy cakes!  Haha . . . I still have complete ownership on girlie cakes and all things cupcake!  But, seriously, he is invaluable to me and he is becoming incredibly talented.  Look out Buddy, there’s another Italian on the cake decorating block!

This cake was done for a very special six year old, whom I have the fortunate of getting to see each and everyday.   He was very specific when it came to directions for his big birthday party . . . at the bowling alley of course (because where else would you take a group of kids around these parts) . . . to play in their camo in the long grass?   This little man wanted “a cake with monster trucks ON it, NOT a cake that IS a monster truck.”  Paul totally wanted to build a monster truck, but he was happy playing with these ones while he built 😉
