St. Eugene Bridal Fair 2012

February 2, 2012 by Jenn

Recently, we had the privilege of attending the first ever Bridal Fair at the St Eugene Golf Resort and Casino.  You have heard me sing the praises of this resort in previous posts, and if you want to read a rave review on their food (and beautiful photography), check out my friend Karen’s (of Toronto Girl West) post here.  St Eugene is one of the most beautiful places and venues that the East Kootenay now has to offer.

The St. Eugene has recently built a new pavilion, and it can hold 350 guests for a reception and 500 if you’re having a concert . . . maybe Bon Jovi is your uncle, and you’re treating your guests to that instead!  The pavilion features “vaulted ceiling peaks, chandeliers, gable window panels, and a dance floor.”  It also features “a fully insulated liner, ceiling fans, and HVAC units for heating and air conditioning will ensure a comfortable atmosphere through every season.”  When we were there, it was actually warm inside . . . not uncomfortably so . . . just right!

Fernie Wedding Locations and Wedding Services In Fernie

Fernie is small town, located in the Southeast corner of the Kootenay’s in British Columbia, Canada.  It is know for it’s excellent skiing, and snowmobiling in the winter, while hiking, and fishing are popular in the summer months!   Having grown up only an hour away from Fernie, we often took day trips to check out the popular shops along Fernie’s main street.  It’s quaint, it’s cute and it has personality!  Fernie is populated with expats from Australia who flock to the ski hills in the winter and their youthful exuberance adds a certain something to the nightlife and culture.

If you are from Fernie, you know this already, but if you are thinking about getting married at a popular destination, Fernie is one of the East Kootenay’s gems . . . nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.

New Orleans Saints Cake- Edible Image

February 1, 2012 by Jenn

It’s the Superbowl this weekend and we are celebrating New Orleans Saints style.  Yes, I’m aware of the fact that New Orleans is NOT in the Superbowl, but I figured it was a fitting post for a football fueled week.

I don’t claim to know ANYTHING about football, especially the NFL.  I used to watch the CFL (which is the Canadian Football League for you non-Canadians reading this), but this was mostly because our family had one TV and I had a brother and father who loved to watch it!

I know TWO facts about professional football: the CFL is more of a passing game, while the NFL is more of a rushing game, and large, sweaty mean wear super tight tights…often white in colour!

Cookie Monster Cake

January 31, 2012 by Jenn

This cake was one of my favourite that I have done in a while.  There is something special about creating children’s cakes.  It must be the Kindergarten teacher in me.

For this cake, I actually had time to enjoy the process during the creating, baking and making processes!  The cake was ordered a month ahead of time, so I had lots of time to practice making Cookie Monster.  The client wanted a Cookie Monster themed cake, with the front hosting a Sesame Street style name and age for the birthday boy . . . beyond those details, I was pretty much free to decorate as I saw fit.  I LOVE those orders . . . FREEDOM is exciting to this cake/cupcake decorator.

Heart Shaped Cupcakes for Valentine’s Day – Video

January 20, 2012 by Jenn

I saw this idea on Pinterest, which is slowly taking over the world!!!  Hahaha . . . it might not be taking over the world, but it’s surely taking over my spare time, and what little I have of it!  If you haven’t seen it yet (where have you been) make sure you go and request an invite (makes it seem like an exclusive club or something) and try it out!  It has tons of ideas for everything!  I use it for kindergarten ideas, along with cakes, cupcakes, and recipes galore!

All you need for this simple activity are some glass marbles, cupcake liners, and cupcake batter!   [Read more…]

Cranbrook Wedding Locations and Wedding Services

January 18, 2012 by Jenn

We have been inundated with calls from brides in the last couple of days, who are eagerly beginning the planning of their 2012 weddings!  Did they all get engaged over Christmas, or were they purposed to at the stroke of midnight on New Years?  Whatever the reason, it looks like it is about to be a very busy wedding season!  We thought that we would put together a listing for all of the local Cranbrook B.C. amenities that would help one of these glittery eyed brides plan their weddings.  Since we have been in the wedding business for a while now, and I for years, we have a lot of contact with some pretty amazing people and we are happy to send work their way.  Unfortunately, one of our favourite photographers of Ryckman Photography recently put the lens away and has moved on with a different focus (check out Micheline’s NEW blog here).  To all of the 2012 (and 2013) brides we have met and talked to, Congratulations!  We hope this helps.  If you are from Fernie, or Invermere, upcoming posts will be about your beautiful areas too! How to Make Valentine’s Day Cupcakes – Video

January 17, 2012 by Jenn

Valentine's Day CupcakesNo, it is NOT too early to post about Valentine’s Day cupcakes!  I went into good ‘0le WalMart yesterday (sorry Dad if you’re reading this . . . pretend you didn’t hear that! . . . he doesn’t go to WalMart as they’re non-union) and the shelves are already FULL of pink, red and white chocolates, marshmallows and candies!  If you want to argue with me about it being too soon, don’t bother, take it up with the huge box stores!  I’m just a little minion, following in their wake 😉

But in all seriousness, Valentine’s Day is extra special to us, as it is the first time we ever had orders come in for JJ’s Custom Cakery! You could say that Valentine’s Day is how it all got started.  What were you expecting I say?  It’s when Paul and I declared our LOVE for each other??  Hahaha!  Nope!  BUT, it WAS when the LOVE of our business sealed us together, forever!  That has to be romantic on some level?  [Read more…]

KitchenAid Pro 5, KitchenAid Artisan and KitchenAid Classic Mixers Compared – Video

January 13, 2012 by Jenn

KitchenAid Pro 5, KitchenAid Artisan and KitchenAid Classic MixersKitchenAid makes a lot of different models of their mixers, each with slightly different options. This makes comparing all the different model difficult if you’re only looking at the names. Since we’ve used our fair share of the different models in our baking, we’ll try to give you a fair assessment between the three of the most popular models; The KitchenAid Pro 5, Artisan and the Classic.

We’ll start by reviewing what all the KitchenAid mixers have on common:

Stainless steel bowl: The size of the bowls may differ, several models have handles and there are a few different types of finishes.

Mixer Attachment: All KitchenAid mixers come with three attachments: a flat beater, a dough hook and a wire whip. These attachments vary in size and in coating, depending on the mixer model.

Speed Range: All models have a 10 speed settings on the switch

Motor and Transmission: All models use an all metal motor and have a straight drive gears that removes the need for a belt that might breakdown.

Power Hub: Each mixer has a power hub for extra KitchenAid Attachments.
