Construction Cake

February 13, 2012 by Jenn

There comes a time in Canada when the roads are impassible!

In the winter it’s often due to the weather . . . snow, ice, sleet, you name it.  Usually it’s pretty nasty to be driving long distances during . . . October to . . . uhhh, about May!

In the summer, impassibility is often due to the dreaded road construction!  When I used to live in Victoria (on Vancouver Island), and drive back in the summer for holidays, it would be pure torture to be in my non-air conditioned, 1986 Honda Accord, in 30 C weather, on black asphalt , trapped along with the 100 other campers, trailers and semi’s along Highway 3 . . . at a dead standstill while the crews laid more asphalt, or dug out new roads.

Cranbrook Bridal Fair Wedding Cakes

February 6, 2012 by Jenn

We have spent the last year building an amazing bridal/wedding cake portfolio!  We have done some amazing cakes (if I do say so myself) and I am extremely proud to show you the wedding cakes that we took with us to the St Eugene Bridal Show at the end of January.  The St Eugene show is now the premier spot to showcase your wedding goods, and boy were we ever ready for the brides!

The following is an overview of the cakes that we took with us to the Bridal show . . . can you guess which one I made, and which ones Paul made??

Love Birds:

This cake is a topsy turvy cake, with a completely edible love bird topper!  Paul carved and sculpted these two cute love birds out of fondant and gum paste.  The topsy turvy is covered in fondant, wrapped the the ribbon and twigs were applied to give it a sparsely wooded feel to it.

Heart Shaped Valentine’s Day Cake

February 3, 2012 by Jenn

My mom and dad happen to celebrate their anniversary on the 1st of February, so this year I made a personalized cake with a Valentine’s Day feel to it!  Unbelievable, it is their 34th anniversary!  I say unbelievably because that is more years than I have been alive . . . can you imagine being with someone for THIRTY FOUR years?  Relationships are certainly worth working for <3.

My dad in secret asked me to make a cake to surprise my mom with.  I totally took advantage of my dad saying, “Make whatever you want,” (LOVE the freedom of design) . . . so what better to make than a Heart Shaped, Valentine’s Day cake!

St. Eugene Bridal Fair 2012

February 2, 2012 by Jenn

Recently, we had the privilege of attending the first ever Bridal Fair at the St Eugene Golf Resort and Casino.  You have heard me sing the praises of this resort in previous posts, and if you want to read a rave review on their food (and beautiful photography), check out my friend Karen’s (of Toronto Girl West) post here.  St Eugene is one of the most beautiful places and venues that the East Kootenay now has to offer.

The St. Eugene has recently built a new pavilion, and it can hold 350 guests for a reception and 500 if you’re having a concert . . . maybe Bon Jovi is your uncle, and you’re treating your guests to that instead!  The pavilion features “vaulted ceiling peaks, chandeliers, gable window panels, and a dance floor.”  It also features “a fully insulated liner, ceiling fans, and HVAC units for heating and air conditioning will ensure a comfortable atmosphere through every season.”  When we were there, it was actually warm inside . . . not uncomfortably so . . . just right!

New Orleans Saints Cake- Edible Image

February 1, 2012 by Jenn

It’s the Superbowl this weekend and we are celebrating New Orleans Saints style.  Yes, I’m aware of the fact that New Orleans is NOT in the Superbowl, but I figured it was a fitting post for a football fueled week.

I don’t claim to know ANYTHING about football, especially the NFL.  I used to watch the CFL (which is the Canadian Football League for you non-Canadians reading this), but this was mostly because our family had one TV and I had a brother and father who loved to watch it!

I know TWO facts about professional football: the CFL is more of a passing game, while the NFL is more of a rushing game, and large, sweaty mean wear super tight tights…often white in colour!

Cookie Monster Cake

January 31, 2012 by Jenn

This cake was one of my favourite that I have done in a while.  There is something special about creating children’s cakes.  It must be the Kindergarten teacher in me.

For this cake, I actually had time to enjoy the process during the creating, baking and making processes!  The cake was ordered a month ahead of time, so I had lots of time to practice making Cookie Monster.  The client wanted a Cookie Monster themed cake, with the front hosting a Sesame Street style name and age for the birthday boy . . . beyond those details, I was pretty much free to decorate as I saw fit.  I LOVE those orders . . . FREEDOM is exciting to this cake/cupcake decorator.

First Birthday! – Owl Birthday Cake & Giant Cupcake

December 29, 2011 by Jenn

Last December, my good friend had her first baby . . . and named her London.  This baby and I were meant to be friends . . . since she was named after one of my favourite cities!  Despite the fact that she spit up all over my new LuLuLemon jacket during one of our first meetings, the love has stayed strong . . . albeit from a distance.  I would love to be able to spend time with this little sweetheart.

She is the cutest, and most well behaved baby ever!  During her grand first birthday party, she was pretty much the only child under the age of two who wasn’t crying, yelling, or snotting!  I <3 her.  Other babies . . . not so much!

Now, a year has gone by and she is a one year old!

To celebrate, we provided the sweet treats!  I felt a lot of pressure providing the birthday cakes for such a sweet, amazing little girl, but I came through . . . with A LOT of cake, right Janine??

How to Make a Fondant Snowman for Christmas Cake Decorating Video

December 19, 2011 by Jenn

As a kid, I remember rolling, and rolling and rolling to make the biggest and greatest snowman that I could.  My brother, being 3 years younger than me, was either helping me, or trying to beat me.  He was slightly competitive!

Often, our attempts were futile, as the pieces of the snowman would get so big that we could never get them off the ground and piled up on top of each other.

Once, back inside, warming up with a mug of hot chocolate, I remember looking out the window and seeing all of the tracks that the rolling snowballs made all over the lawn, and the “dead” snowballs at the end of them. . . the ones that were too heavy to roll any further, or even attempt to lift.  They were often quite ugly, tube shaped and covered with brown chunks of grass that had been picked up along the way!
