Royal Icing Daffodil Flowers

April 14, 2013 by Jenn

Daffodils made from piped royal icing are a great decoration for your cakes and cupcakes. Royal icing flowers are typically used for decorating traditional wedding cakes.

Nothing says springtime like a daffodil! We’re finally out of the ugliness of winter, and shortly, the tiny green buds will be poking through the ground!

Side story . . . my aunt died of cancer a number of years ago now, and my uncle, to honour her memory, got a tattoo of a yellow daffodil, with the letters “HB” underneath it . .  or above it?  I can’t quite remember. The daffodil is to remember her courageous fight with cancer and the letters stand for Honey Bunny, their term of endearment for each other.  My auntie was an incredible women, brought three amazing kids into this world, and made my uncle a very happy man.  I can’t help but think of her whenever I see a daffodil, or a crocus.  Her ashes are laid at a place called Crocus Hill on her parent’s farm in Alberta.

April 2013 Contest

April 10, 2013 by Jenn

We are very, very. very. . . very . . . appreciative of all that our YouTube fans bring to us.  Inspiration!  Excitement!  Most of all, enthusiasm!  We, and when I say “we” I’m talking Paul and I (my behind the scenes genius), are so thankful to have the opportunity to work on YouTube, with amazing colleagues.  But, without our fans and subscribers, we wouldn’t have a channel.  So, to thank one of you (it can only be one unfortunately), we try to give a little bit back.  This month it’s a spring cake pop decorating kit.  To enter, head over to our channel, CupcakesandCardio, subscribe, and let me know what you want to see me whip up!  Good luck and thanks for watching me 🙂

How to Cover a Square Cake with Fondant – Video

April 5, 2013 by Jenn

In this video we’ll show you how to cover a square cake with Satin Ice fondant.  I have found that using Satin Ice fondant is the best for covering cakes.  It is soft enough to roll out large amounts but sturdy enough to not have to worry about tears, cracks or bubbles.

Fondant Rabbit Cupcake Toppers

March 23, 2013 by Jenn

In this video we demonstrate how to make a bunny rabbit face from fondant or gum paste to use as cupcake toppers.  This is great for decorating cupcakes over the Easter holidays!

I’ve been going back through my videos on my YouTube channel, and somehow I missed putting this one up on the blog!  What the hay?  How did that happen?  Oh, right.  I got busy, overwhelmed and crawled into a hole.  BUT NOW I’M OUT and madly posting massive amounts of Easter videos for your enjoyment next weekend! I’ll try to get up the accompanying Fondant Carrot Cupcake Topper video post, but if I get hit by a bus, it’s on “The YouTube”.

How to Make Rice Krispies Treats

March 20, 2013 by Jenn

How do decorator’s make all of those crazy, gravity defying cake pieces that bring about ‘ooh’s and awh’s”?  They use Rice Krispies treats!  Or cereal treats as Cake Boss likes to say.

Using Rice Krispies treats as decorated cake accents is sometimes easier than using actual cake.  The pieces are lighter, but sturdier, so they can be molded, shaped and positioned at difficult angles.  Pieces of the Rice Krispies treats are solid (due to the marshmallow component) and can act as solid bases that supports can be inserted into.

Some people use pre-made cereal bars, but making your own from scratch is super simple and worth the extra work . . . especially if you’re just going to enjoy them as a low fat snack.
