Flower Pot Cake Pops for Mother’s Day

May 3, 2014 by Jenn

In our final Mother’s Day idea for 2014, we are working on Flower Pot Cake Pops!!  Yes, in the video introduction I accidentally say “cupcakes”, so don’t be confused!  They’re cake pops!!  All I can say is, “Oops.”  Forgive me.

What I like about these cake pops is that they are bright and cheery, which is perfect for any spring time celebration, and definitely perfect for a wonderful Mom! You can make the pots any colour that you want, and for mine, I chose to use the new Peanut Butter melting wafers from Merckens.  I had previously seen them at Bulk Barn (where I get many of my supplies) and thought that they would be a good colour for these flower pots.  The wafers melted perfectly, and they also tasted great!  Just like peanut butter chips.

I love being able to incorporate parts of previous projects in new ideas, such as using the mini royal icing daisies that I made a couple of weeks ago with cupcakes (link below in the ingredients), as a topper to these cake pops.  I always seem to end up with extra flowers whenever I make them, which is a good thing in case of breakage, so when I was planning on what type of flowers to use for these cake pops, the daisies literally fell out of storage, saying “Pick us! Pick us!”

This is a pretty straight forward cake pop tutorial, but as always, if you have any questions, just let me know in the comments!

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Bouquet for Mother’s Day

April 30, 2014 by Jenn

Mother’s Day is one of the most special days for all of the amazing women in our lives!  If you are lucky enough to have a Mom like the one that I do, you are incredibly fortunate.  My Mom and I recently starting working together and we are currently teaching the same grade, at the same school.  Being that we both have the same last name, it’s a little tricky for the adults in the building, but our 5 year old students seem to understand the difference just fine.  It’s quite funny actually.  The adults seem to stumble over how to refer and differentiate between the two Kindergarten teachers, but the kids, just go with the flow and line up with the right person each day.  Having this new working relationship with my mom has been very special, and it has allowed me to see the genius she has in her craft of teaching.  She is an amazing role model to students, parents and to her colleagues.

I wanted to make her something special for Mother’s Day this year, and knowing that she loves chocolate and strawberries, I knew I had to turn them into a bouquet for her this year.  Last year she got a cupcake bouquet, which she loved, but I know that when I make this again for her on May 11, 2014, she’s going to love it even more than she did her bouquet last year.

Gathering the skewers together in the centre of the vase was the only tricky part to this video.  I used a twist tie to secure them in place, and this also helped to stabilize the structure.  The length of the skewers can make standing the up can create quite a tilt in the vase, so make sure that your vase is secure before you abandon it on the counter!

The tutorial is very simple and can be done with kids of all ages.  It is also a healthy alternative to other sweets that you might be inclined to make for Mom . . . not that there is anything wrong with that, but with the push for people to stay away from sugar lately, this is one of those tutorials that does just that!

I hope you have a great Mom in your life like I do, and that you take time to recognize the amazing woman that she is!

How to Make a Cupcake Bouquet for Mother’s Day

April 27, 2013 by Jenn

I have the best Mom!

I’m sure you think you all do, but, sorry, mine takes that title!  If you have been a frequent viewer of my videos on YouTube, you will have “met” my mom before.  She is such a great sport to accompany me in my videos.

When you are buying a present for the best mom in the world, the magnitude of choosing the perfect present can be very daunting, so instead of a present this year, I’m MAKING her a present.  Nothing says “love” like a homemade gift.  Maybe I should add a construction paper card to go with the “present”.  Oh dear.  Let’s just hope she still loves me after Mother’s Day this year.

Chocolate Dream Bars: Baking with My Mom

May 13, 2012 by Jenn

Happy Mother’s Day!

This was a very special mother’s day video that my mom and I filmed together and it was such a special activity!  I was working on about four hours of sleep, so I was a bit delirious, but working in the kitchen with my mom, who taught me how to bake, brought me back to life that day!

When we first discussed our idea to bake with my mom for our Mother’s Day video, I approached my mom with the concept, and we brainstormed different recipes that we could do.  I really wanted to have something that would be special to both of us, and that would be something that we could reminisce over.

Thanks for baking with me Mom, and Happy Mother’s Day!

Chocolate Dream Bar Ingredients:
1/3 cup butter
3 tablespoons white sugar
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cocoa powder
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup nuts
1/2 cup coconut
1 teaspoon baking powder
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup brown sugar

Top with chocolate buttercream and you have an amazing treat to enjoy with your loved ones.

Spring Flower Cupcakes

May 19, 2011 by Jenn

It is FINALLY spring.  It has been a lllllooooooonnnnngggggg, cold, grey winter/ “spring” ’round these parts this year (was that country enough for y’all?).

It’s almost the May long weekend and we are finally getting sun.  I finally had to cut the lawn.  I finally had to weed out the dandelions (which took Paul and I two hours each! . . . WITH a handy dandy dandelion digger-upper thingy).  Some of you may think that weeding and mowing the lawn is not something that one would be looking forward to, but I totally was!  Nuts.

But, I had my reasons for this . . . two reasons . . .

One: having to weed and mow a lawn means I have a lawn!  WHOOT!  I’m so happy where I’m living now.  A real house!  Who would have thought 🙂

Two: If the grass and dandelions are growing (weeds included) it means that the sun is shining and bringing everything back to life . . . from the doldrums of winter.  S.A.D. anyone?  Vitamin D is my best friend . . . best natural head meds you can find!

THREE (I said I had two reasons, oh well):  My garden is growing!  Rhubard is up, raspberry stalks are sprouting, and the seeds are in the dirt.  Yay!  I planted some stuff that I plan to use in my cupcakes, and I will be able to say I really made them!  Like, really!

This was my Mother’s Day Spring Bouquet.  Happy belated Mother’s day to all the fabulous Mother’s out there . . . especially to my own!

These next ones were an order for Mother’s Day cupcakes.  I had free rein to try whatever I wanted, so I got out my tools and set to work!

I love the orange rosette on these ones!

Happy spring everyone . . . knock on wood . . . fingers crossed . . . salt over shoulder . . . and all other superstitions that could work in our favour and keep the sun out!
