I’ve been wanting to make homemade bubble gum for a while now. When Target was closing here in Canada, I bought all of their remaining DIY gum kits, with the intention of doing a review of the kits. Unfortunately I did not like the kit, and not wanting to give a product a negative review I just scrapped the idea, but still used the gum base from them. Finding gum base is actually pretty tricky! I know I’m in trouble when I can’t find something on Amazon. I was looking just for gum base for a place to send you all, but there isn’t such thing right now. My link to the gum base below goes to a DIY gum kit (not the one I didn’t like though!).

Making the gum is surprisingly easy. Like crazy easy. By using the gum base, all you’re actually doing is adding sweetener and flavouring to the gum. The gum base smells horrible by the way! You need a lot of flavouring to drown it out. The longer you knead in the icing sugar, the chewier the gum with be. Be careful not to touch the mixture when it’s hot though- I used a mini spatula to start the mixing/kneading process.

Homemade Bubble Gum

homemade bubble gum

Bubble Gum made with Jello
Ingredients:

  • 2 teaspoons Jello powder (Buy it here: http://amzn.to/2cjmuLw)
  • 1 tablespoon light corn syrup
  • 3 tablespoons gum base (Buy it here: http://amzn.to/2cGRa4T)
  • 1/2-1 cups icing sugar

Procedure:

  1. Combine gum base, corn syrup, and flavoring in a microwavable bowl. Stir together then heat in the microwave for 30 seconds to soften the gum base.
  2. Stir mixture together, and then heat for another 30 seconds.
  3. Once  mixture has liquefied, pour it on to a well of icing sugar on a non-stick mat. It will be hot! Gently fold it into the icing sugar using a small spatula. Once it has cooled enough to the touch, continue to knead the gum into the icing sugar as stickiness requires.
  4. Once gum piece is smooth and no longer sticky, tear or cut gum into bite sized pieces and store in a ziplock container for 1-2 weeks.
