I haven’t done a Fortunate Friday post in quite some time and since I’m fully immersed up to my elbows in the cake world lately, I thought I would make my Fortunate Friday about all of the CAKE DECORATING TOOLS that I find helpful. . . and of course, we can’t forget the cupcakes!
Before I jump into the Cake Decorating Tools that make caking easier, I HAVE to thank Paul for the early Christmas present! You might have noticed the blog got a makeover! Isn’t it pretty!? I love it . . . thanks P! I’m so fortunate to have him <3
5 Cake Decorating Tools
1. Edible Ink Printer– This has been a tool that has come in extremely helpful. It allows the cake decorator to print pretty much ANY image onto edible paper, and place it on top of a cake or even cupcakes!
We currently use a Cannon MP640 to do our edible prints. What’s important to remember is to make sure that you do not ever put non-edible ink into the machine. The first ink that runs through the machine, must be edible ink.
Edible Inks are a specially formulated food coloring mixture for printing onto icing sheets. The colors are matched with regular inks, then modified to hold their coloring better on the icing sheets.
We get our edible ink and edible paper from Icing Images.
We have a step by step guide for you to watch on YouTube as well. Check it out here.
2. Cricut Cake – If you missed the cool things that the Cricut Cake can do that I posted a couple of days ago, check it out Cricut Cake- Cutting Fondant and Gum Paste Basics for Cake Decorating. Basically, the additional font and images that the Cricut Cake can provide you with is very helpful to allowing you to have a variety of products to offer any cake clients, or for your own home decorating purposes.
3. Gum Paste Tools– I could not live without these tools! They are basically for making flowers, stems and accents, but I find that they come in handy for basically any kind of decorating that I need to do with small, finicky fondant/gum paste work. The ones that I use are Wilton, but I know that there are a variety of different brands that you can buy like Aceto, or Fat Daddios. I haven’t tried any of the other varieties, but I’m sure the premise is the same as it is with the Wilton version.
4. Satin Ice Fondant–
We have found that the Satin Ice brand of fondant is one of the best for covering cakes! It is soft, yet not too soft, and it is able to hold it’s shape for the brief period of time when you are trying to get the cake off of your mat where you rolled it out, and onto the cake…all without it tearing!
There are an amazing amount of fondant brands out there and we have worked with a couple different ones now. Some are better for scultping, some are better for moulding and like I’ve said, Satin Ice is one of the better ones for covering cake.
We will be doing a fondant comparison in the future, so watch for that upcoming post!
5. Silicone Moulds– These are a huge time saving trick and worth the investment! Basically, a silicone mould is a flexible mould that helps you to create exciting shapes and figures to add to your cakes and cupcakes! They are products that you can purchase on pretty much any decorating website. We happened to find ours on Ebay.
We have done a YouTube video called Using Fondant and Gum Paste Silicone Molds and Impression Mats and you can find it here.
If you notice the border along the baby bum cake in #4 above, you will see the baby items that I used a silicon mould to create. Silicone moulds are also great for creating small flowers, mini cupcake toppers and even borders, as you can see.
So these are my top 5 Cake Decorating Tools.
If you are a cake decorator, what are your favourite cake decorating tools?
Happy Friday!
Hey I have a weird question how do u make buttercream thicker
It’s a good question! In order to make it thicker (if it’s already thin) add more icing sugar. If you haven’t started making it yet, use less liquid (milk). Hope that helps!
Love the new blog layout 🙂
ME TOO! It was the greatest present ever! I love how straight and perfect “my” hair is.
