What I’m Reading

December 4, 2010 by Jenn

I finished Nick Hornby’s Slam (really funny by the way), and now I’m on to Wicked by Gregory Maguire.  Wicked is a story about how the Wicked Witch of the West ended up so wicked . . . and hopefully they explain how she became green.   We’ll see how it is . . . I’ve heard mixed reviews.  Some people say they love it, some people have said it is hard to get into.

The travelling Broadway production of Wicked is coming to Spokane in the spring, and I’m thinking that will be a great Christmas present for my mom (uhhhh . . . and I).  A fun mother/daughter getaway in May!

The thing I like about reading the book the most right now is that the edges of the pages are vibrant emerald green . . . I think I like it so much just because it’s different than the same old newsprint.

After Sarah’s Key….I’m on to something a little bit lighter.  The holocaust is a heavy subject to read about….but very important.

Onto a new-lighter book…I have read most of Nick Hornby’s other books, so hopefully this one lives up to the rest.  One of the greatest movies eva…was About a Boy…but, thinking about it, I was a teenager, so perhaps my judgment of movies was slightly …..off.

Here is a synopsis of this story….it is about teenage pregnancy, and it is told from the teenagers perspective.  That is the gist of what Wikipedia had to say!

I have just started Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay

Summary (from BookBrowse.com):

Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten year-old girl, is brutally arrested with her family by the French police in the Vel’ d’Hiv’ roundup, but not before she locks her younger brother in a cupboard in the family’s apartment, thinking that she will be back within a few hours.

Paris, May 2002: On Vel’ d’Hiv’s 60th anniversary, journalist Julia Jarmond is asked to write an article about this black day in France’s past. Through her contemporary investigation, she stumbles onto a trail of long-hidden family secrets that connect her to Sarah. Julia finds herself compelled to retrace the girl’s ordeal, from that terrible term in the Vel d’Hiv’, to the camps, and beyond. As she probes into Sarah’s past, she begins to question her own place in France, and to reevaluate her marriage and her life.

Tatiana de Rosnay offers us a brilliantly subtle, compelling portrait of France under occupation and reveals the taboos and silence that surround this painful episode.

Secret Daughter – Shilpi Somaya Gowda

A volunteer at the hospital noticed that I was reading this book, and she had nothing but great things to say about it, and about Shilpi Somaya Gowda’s other two novel’s.  I’m planning to find those to read as well.

So far, it’s pretty gripping . . . gets you interested right from the start.
