Jurassic World Fossil Dinosaur Cake

June 4, 2015 by Jenn

The Jurassic Park movie scared the bejebus out of me when I was a kid.  I have no idea why I am looking forward to seeing the new movie, Jurassic World, as the trailer for it looks just as scary as the Park version!   Why must these people make dinosaur PARKS??  WHY!?  It’s torture to sit through.

I’ll be sure to get a giant popcorn and pop and to sit through the whole movie.

Birthday Cake Pancakes

May 24, 2015 by Jenn

Today is my nephew’s third birthday, and one of my BFF’s birthday’s as well.  It is the perfect day to make these pancakes for them. Unfortunately, neither of them live close enough for me to drive them to them to celebrate. Well, I guess I could drive them there, but they wouldn’t be very good after a day in the car.  Hmm, never mind.

Melting Candle Rainbow Cake

February 14, 2015 by Jenn
This is such an amazing birthday cake idea . . . in my humble opinion!  Sometimes when it comes to decorating cake or cupcakes, you need to make sure that you are precise and perfect, but with an idea like this one, you can be as messy, aka artistic, as you want to be!

I searched all over town for all of the candles that I ended up putting on this cake.  Whatever you can find, however crazy looking, buy them and put them on this cake!  It was tricky to find enough of the purple candles, as for some reason that colour isn’t included in some of the candle packs.  If you’re in Canada, I found the candles I used in the video at Bulk Barn and Target (RIP).

Popcorn Cake (No Bake)

February 11, 2015 by Jenn
I love popcorn.  It’s my vice in the evenings.  Really, it’s probably a habit that I should quit, but I just can’t quit it.  Yet.  But I should try. Soon.  Maybe.  But I like it!  Years ago, my friend Kim introduced me to the wonders of popcorn with Smarties.  Say what?  Popcorn and chocolate?  OMG,  Everyday I curse and applaud her for this.  Thank you dear friend.

Well, now that you have direct proof of my mental struggle with food, I will move on to the actually reason you are here reading this, and that is for the Popcorn Cake!

If you love a salty and sweet combination, which I also love, but we don’t want to get into that, this is the perfect no-bake cake for you! Start out with a basic recipe that you might find for rice krispies treats (marshmallows and butter), and add in any of your favourite small candies or chocolates, press it into a cake pan, and ta-da!  A popcorn cake!

Rainbow Loom Cake

September 6, 2014 by Jenn

When I made my first rainbow loom bracelet, I proudly posted a picture on Instagram, showing off my ability to rainbow loom.  I was quickly put in my place and was told I was not rainbow looming, but in fact was using a Cray-Z loom.  I had NO idea what the comment meant.  I had to research to learn that I was using a different brand from rainbow loom.  How embarrassing!  I was called out my a pre-teen.

In order to make this cake, I first had to research what in the world a Rainbow Loom even was.  I had heard of it in passing, but in order to FULLY understand what I would be making, I went out and bought one.  I was pretty much instantly addicted.  Making these bracelets reminded me so much of making friendship bracelets from when I was younger.  It took this old bird a while to figure out the directions and how to “pick” the elastics, but once that was out of the way, I was a bracelet making machine.

Once I had established the idea behind how to loom, I was ready to build it into a cake.  Or so I thought!  I tried a couple different versions of this, like a cupcake cake for example and it just wasn’t working for me.  I went back to the drawing board . . . or looming board . . . and started again with a rectangle cake.

Making the elastics from ribbons of sour belts is a little bit time consuming, but easy.  The most difficult part was being patient enough to not shove the candy directly into the flame of a candle to speed the process up.  Trust me, it doesn’t!  It just burns the candy and leaves the ends black.  I tried using licorice ropes, and regular licorice to make the elastics, but I didn’t have any luck with them.  What I also liked about the sour belts was the fact that they provided a number of different colours to work with.

Can you guess what kind of bracelet I was making?

Frozen Cake with Elsa

July 18, 2014 by Jenn

This is one of my most favourite videos that I have done; the reason for that being that I got to make it with my adorable niece, Elsa!  We have been inundated with requests for a Frozen themed cake since the movie came out, but I HAD to wait for Elsa to come and make it with me.  I couldn’t do it without her as it’s her favourite movie, and Disney clearly named their main character after her.

Elsa is three years old, and she stood on a tiny stool for over an hour while we put this cake together.  She was patient, helpful and did an amazing job for any child, never-mind one that is only three!  She loved clapping along with me to sync our mics, and when the time came to decorate, or follow instructions, she was right on and eager to do it!  Being that my brother and his family live in Minnesota, I don’t get to see them often.  I can sure tell that he and my sister-in-law have done an amazing job raising two lovely children.  It was such an honor to be able to put this cake together.

To make this cake, you have to learn how to make candy.  It’s really simple, despite the fact that you need to use boiling hot, liquid sugar!!  Follow my previous post and video tutorial on how to do that here.

I can’t make a video of a Frozen cake without commenting on what a great movie Frozen is.  Disney did a great job with appealing to the masses, and the ages.  I’m not one to watch Disney, or cartoons much anymore, but with this movie, I loved it so much that I bought it.  I loved everything about it, and sang along with each song.  Call me crazy.  I’ll let it go.
