I’ve got to confess, I bought the earrings and necklace for me during a killer sale from Kate Spade. And I gifted the cake and said Kate Spade earrings and necklace to myself when we were done filming. Phew, that feels better to get off my chest! Definitely no buyers remorse with this purchase!

 Hidden Gift Cake tutorial

Whether you call it a surprise inside, or a pinata, creating a cake with a surprise on the inside,  is by far one of the best cakes to make. Now, to top that surprise component, I’m presenting you with the ultimate way to “wrap” a present . . . INSIDE a cake! If you hate wrapping, this is the way to go. Hahahaha.  I can’t imagine someone who hates wrapping presents would go to this extent to deliver a present

I love the idea of making a present cake (where there is a surprise inside of it or not). Most of all, I love the tissue paper look in between the top and bottom parts of the cake. Without it, I think the cake would be way too boring. I went the simplistic design of the snowflakes on blue paper, with blue ribbon. Then on the inside as a color contrast, Red velvet was my go to. You could theme these any colors you wanted to though!

Hidden Gift Cake

Ingredients and Materials:

  • 4×8″ square Red Velvet Cakes
  • Cream Cheese buttercream
  • Royal blue, sky blue and white fondant
  • Small gift that will fit in a jar

Procedure:

  1. Attach one cake to cake board with a dab of buttercream. Cut a circle the size of the jar’s diameter in the center of 3 of the cakes. Stack cakes and layer with buttercream. Place jar inside of the hole. Cover jar with half a slice of the removed circle of cake. Cover entire cake in cream cheese buttercream.
  2. Place 4th cake layer on a cardboard cake board and cover completely in cream cheese buttercream.
  3. Cover both the sides of the cakes in sky blue fondant. Also cover the top of the smaller cake with blue fondant.
  4. Roll out royal blue fondant and slice with a ribbon cutter using the wavy blades. Place fondant ribbon strips onto the sides of the bottom cake, securing with a small amount of water. Place fondant strips on to the sides and top of the lid of the cake.
  5. Roll out additional royal blue ribbon, cut into 5″ strips. Fold strips so the ends meet and trim the ends to a point. Turn ribbon on it’s side and allow to dry.
  6. Cut squares of fondant and pinch to form tissue paper like pieces. Place pieces along the edge of the cake, covering the seam.
  7. Insert dowels to support cake. Place lid on top and fill in any gaps with additional “tissue paper”.
  8. Cut snowflakes from white fondant and place on the sides and top of the cake.
  9. Assemble bow using a small amount of blue buttercream in the center of the lid and inserting the pointed piece of the bow. You’ll likely use 10-12 pieces.
  10. Slice and serve cake when desired. Cake should be kept in a sealed container in the fridge and consumed within 2-3 days.
