Thanks to Cooking Fever for sponsoring this video . . . and for having such a large selection of foods in the game for me to pick from for my cake idea! I’ve always wanted to do a popcorn cake, but wanted to do it way differently than the ones I have already seen on the internet. The best way to kick a cake up a notch? Make it defy gravity- no biggie. Surprisingly, making antigravity cakes is super easy . . . it’s all just an illusion that something is floating or pouring, or whatever the cake is doing. As I say in the video, I love popcorn. Seriously. I’ve actually already made a popcorn cake– a cake made out of only popcorn and chocolate candies- but for this cake, I wanted to do something I hadn’t seen anyone else ever do. I’ve seen the popcorn kernels made from marshmallows and fondant, and I’ve seen caramel corn cakes. But never have I seen a gravity defying popcorn cake! I found my air popper at Canadian Tire, but you can grab one here on Amazon.
Despite how tricky this cake looks, it’s actually pretty easy to make and assemble. I went with white and yellow 8″ round cakes on the inside, simply because I thought the red would make it overkill. You can choose any color you want to make the cake batter- it colors really well. You can do a 100% fondant covered cake if you choose, but since most people just peel it off and don’t eat it, I usually try not to use too much of it.
Have fun making this cake and make sure you make extra popcorn if you’re a popcorn fanatic like me or there will be none left for the cake from all the snacking.
How to Make a Gravity Defying Popcorn Cake (Cooking Fever Cake):
Ingredients and Materials:
- Prepared 8″ Vanilla cake colored yellow and white
- Vanilla buttercream coloured red and white
- White Fondant
- Yellow Fondant
- Blue Fondant
- Red Americolor Gel Paste
- White Americolor Coloring
- Fondant/Gum Paste Decorating Tool Kit
- Fondant Smoother
- Popcorn air popper
- Popcorn kernels
- Popcorn containers
- White chocolate
- Cake Dowel
- Cardboard cake boards
- Letter cutters
Procedure:
- Pop the popcorn kernels as per popper instructions.
- Stack the cakes and fill with white buttercream. Cover entire cake with red buttercream and smooth.
- Stripe cake with 1 1/4″x 8″ pieces of white fondant, meeting the pieces in the middle of the cake. Remove excess.
- Create “pop” sign out of fondant by cutting pieces out with rounds and rectangles.
- With the help of a hot glue gun, attach the dowel into the plastic popcorn container and allow to solidify before attaching the cardboard.
- Stick popcorn pieces to cardboard with melted white chocolate (or glue). Allow to harden before inserting into the cake. Ensure that there is at least 3″-4″ of doweling without popcorn attached to it so that it can be inserted fully into the cake.
- Insert dowel into the cake for the anti-gravity effect! The plastic popcorn container should be supported via the dowel and cardboard.
- Cover top of cake with additional popcorn, attaching it to the side of the cake as it is “falling”.
- Place onto large cake board, and if desired, add an additional container of spilled popcorn beside the cake.
- Cake should be consumed within 2-3 days and kept in the fridge in a sealed container or wrapped in plastic wrapped.
