A few months ago I had the pleasure of hosting a talented Food Network Canada crew in my hometown of Cranbrook, B.C., Canada. They needed to know the best spots in town that they could share with the rest of Canada and the world! Unfortunately, it was a rare dark and dreary day, so the crew didn’t get to see the beautiful Rocky Mountains but I definitely brought them on a tour of beautiful food.

We started the day with breakfast and much needed coffee at Max’s Place (I was up at 6:00am for Hair and Makeup). Lisa and Graham, the owners of Max’s are great people and since they moved back to town 4 years ago and bought Max’s, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to work with them in regards to local food production but more recently, I just consume their delicious eats! My favourite of late is their giant cinnamon buns smothered in cream cheese topping. If your day needs to start with a sugar rush like mine, you need to try this treat. This stop was super fun to film because I got to help Graham in the kitchen! I want to be in the kitchen, making delicious treats so I felt at home with him as the expert!
After breakfast, we were on to lunch at The Heidout. A few years ago, one of Cranbrook’s fine dining establishments, Heidi’s, re-branded, renovated, added a brewery in the basement, and became The Heidout! I was a huge fan of Heidi’s so I admit I was a little disappointed when the change was announced. But, Heidi transferred some of the favourites from the old menu over to the new (mine were the Mediterranean vegetables, and the calamari) and added tons of new ones. The new menu items have been amazing, and at the top of the pack for me is her Stuffed Yorkie! It’s a Yorkshire pudding stuffed with roast beef, au jus, pea shoots and horseradish aioli.
Our final stop of the day was at the best sushi restaurant in town- Sakura Sushi and Grill. My favourite roll, that I’ve been ordering for years, is the Kiss of Fire. I was let in on a secret menu a few visits ago, so I had my host Jenny, choose something new from it. She made an amazing choice and went with the Yam Nigri. It was to die for amazing. The most difficult part of the day was definitely trying to do dainty eating shots while using chopsticks and picking up a huge piece of sushi covered in the kiss of fire toppings! Life is so hard . . . LOL.
I want to thank the wonderful people at each of the stops Lisa, Graham, Heidi, Jordan, and Jenny! You guys were all amazing hosts and made my job even easier (than it already was!). If you are a Cranbrookian and haven’t tried these three wonderful spots, you must go and try them! Tell them Jenn Johns and the Food Network.ca show sent you!
