Today I am showing you how to make a Paw Patrol cake shaped like a dog bowl, complete with a hiding dog paw print inside the cake!

Virtually every child I know under 5 years old is obsessed with this show. Like dangerously obsessed. They have PAW Patrol clothes, bedding, toys, toothbrushes, books, and dish wear….every single thing is dominated by these little pups! I’ve had this idea for a dog bowl cake for quite some time, but I needed something that made it a bit more exciting, because lets face it a dog bowl isn’t that exciting, no matter how cute the toys are.
My niece and nephew are obsessed with PAW Patrol, well at least they were the last time I saw them. Something more popular has probably come around by now and little do I know- they’re in Minnesota and I’m up here in Canada. By the way, the PAW Patrol show is a Canadian show. Who’d have thunk it? Quick, name one famous Canadian show? I’ve got mine…Littlest Hobo. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you have to look it up on YouTube. We only had two TV channels as kids and it was one of the shows on it all the time and it was a show about a dog, so it ties in perfectly here.
I chose to make this cake with the paw hiding in the middle a little differently than I normally do. Usually I twice bake the cake, but in order to get the placement of the paw prints in the correct spots, it was necessary to carve out the cake areas that were needed and fill them with cake pop mixture. I definitely prefer the twice baking method, so you wont see me doing it this way again for a while.
Carving and decorating this cake is definitely easy and any beginner can do a project like this. The only area you need to be careful on is getting the inside paw to look correct.
How to Make a Paw Patrol Cake
Ingredients
- 3 x 8″ round vanilla cake
- Blue and white vanilla buttercream
- Red, white, blue and yellow Fondant
- Silver edible spray
- Chocolate cake pop mix
- Nesquik cereal
- Paw Patrol Cutters
Procedure
- Attach first cake layer to the cake board with a swipe of buttercream. Cut out a 6cm round circle divot from the centre of the bottom layer. Fill hole with cake pop mixture.
- Turn second layer upside down and remove the same amount of cake and fill with cake pop mixture.
- Flip layer back over and attach to second layer with white buttercream.
- From the top of the second layer, remove an 11cm in diameter divot and fill with cake pop mix.
- Flip over the third layer and dig out a 6cm divot and fill with cake pop mix.
- Carve cake into dog bowl shape, remove a small portion from the top for indentation, and cover entire thing in blue buttercream.
- Using paw patrol cutters, cut out various fondant pieces. Let dry and place on the front of the cake. Arrange M&M’s in paw prints around the cake and top with cereal.
It’s very nice!!! Fantastic!!! I am Brazilian and I’ll make it. Thanks for all
How many people would this cake feed? I’m looking to do this for my nephews party. We have a huge family so curious as to how many it feeds.
Just watched the video for your Paw Patrol Birthday Party Cake. So cute!! And helpfully detailed!!
I’m going to try to insert the hidden paw in pink (or maybe red) for Skye since it will be for my granddaughter who will be 4 on Saturday. I’m a little concerned as to whether I can pull this off without a trial run. It looks a little difficult. Thank you for giving the exact dimensions for an 8″ round, three layer cake.
Also, since I’ve never made cake pops before so glad you included the link to the recipes! And the suggestion for pink paw prints . . . .awesome!
Thank you for sharing your talents!
Marjorie
PS – I will hopefully have some pictures to share!
Hi, I just wanted to share, I made this cake yesterday for my great nephew’s 2nd birthday. I followed the video exactly how you were doing it and it did not turn out for me, Also, when doing the paw cookie cutters out of fondant, how long should you let them dry before putting them together? Thank you, I enjoyed looking at your website and all of the cakes you have done. I have not ever made anything like this before, so it is a work in progress to learn how to do them.
Thank you
Debbie
It looks awesome!
Hello,
Would love to make this for my son’s birthday, who is also obsessed with paw patrol… but I have a question… when you say carve and fill with cake pop mixture… do you re bake it??? or is the cake pop mixture already baked??? Little confused…
No, cake pop mixture is crumbled cake mixed with buttercream so there is no need to bake it again
Have you ever made this using glutten free cake mix? The reason I ask, is I am using a glutten free cake mix for the first time (a family attending the party can only have very limited amounts of glutten). My question is if the cake will be firm enough to shape into the dog bowl….
I haven’t tried this recipe with gluten free.
What size of the paw patrol cutters did you use?
I used the 4″ cutters. Thanks for asking!
What size paw patrol cutters did you use there are 4 different size sets?
