Last Thanksgiving I showed you how to make a 3D Turkey cake, so today I went with a different fake food for the holiday season and I’m showing you how to make a Glazed Ham cake! This cake will be a great Christmas or Thanksgiving dessert, and will definitely fool your guests!

What’s better than a glazed ham for Thanksgiving dinner? Well, a turkey cooked by my mom, but what I mean is a glazed ham CAKE is better! This cake is so fun as it’s going to shock your friends and family at their holiday meal when you present this cake to them. I’m putting my faith in you that you will make it, and you will present it to them. And then you will take pictures and send them to me so I can enjoy your family’s shock. Shocking the family during the holiday’s is something that all families should enjoy- or is that just mine?
I had to buy a real ham for this cake- sometimes you just have to take the hit. I was working on the practice version of this cake for a couple of hours, fighting with the shade of pink that just wouldn’t look right, when I finally gave in to the fact that I had to go to the store to get a real ham. I hate going to the store at 10:00 PM. The people there are weird (which is why I’m there obviously). I’m usually not looking my best- covered in icing and flour, and sweaty. But, I couldn’t look at the wrong colour of pink for one more minute. It was really helpful and I totally suggest you grab one to match your pinks properly. Besides, after your ham loving great uncle freaks out that you made a fake ham, you can swap it out and serve him the model ham. It’s a win win!
Cloves are one of those spices that you either love or hate, and I’ll admit that the flavour of the cloves inserted into the fondant definitely influence the flavour of the fondant, and first layer of cake. You don’t have to put all of them in like I did to prevent a bit of flavour transfer, or you can always make the cloves with fondant. That might take a while though! You can use a real pineapple for the top of the cake if you want to save yourself a step, but be sure to make sure the pineapple is dry, and won’t leak juices all over the cake.
3D Ham Cake
Ingredients:
- 6″ baked round cake (any flavour)
- 6″ baked diameter half sphere (ball) cake (any flavour)
- Pink, light pink, dark pink, white, green buttercream Recipe here: https://youtu.be/rjqOTM5icOE
- Candies- orange Mike and Ike, green Skittles, red M&M’s
- Brown and yellow fondant
- Cloves
Procedure:
- Level round and ball cakes, and set removed tops to the side to use later.
- Stack 6″ and ball cakes together, and trim a thin portion off one of the sides to allow the cake to sit flat.
- Place trimmed section down on a cake plate, and cover cake in white (or desired) buttercream.
- Roll fondant out to 15″ diameter circle, and lift to cover cake. Smooth with fondant smoother, and trim excess. Remove fondant from the front of the ham with an exacto knife.
- Using a straight edge or ruler, score fondant into squares. Go over with a veining tool if necessary to exaggerate lines.
- Using a large paintbrush and water, brush fondant with water to give it a glazed appearance.
- Press a clove into each of the diamond areas.
- Cover front of cake (where fondant was removed) with pink buttercream. Add other shades of pink and work into base buttercream for a smooth appearance.
- Using the reserved slice of cake from leveling the cakes and trim edges to match main cake diameter. Cover top and sides of slice with pink buttercream, and add other shades of pink and work into the base color to smooth. Wrap edge in thin slice of fondant and press in a few cloves.
- Using the yellow fondant, roll it out to 1/2″ thick and cut with a large, and small round cutter to form a “pineapple” slice. Using a sharp tool score the yellow pineapple with many marks on the top, outer edges and inner edges. Place “pineapple” on top of the ham and place a red candy in the middle of the pineapple as the “cherry”.
- On serving platter, cover places around where the cake will sit with green icing (garnish, lettuce etc).
- Transfer cake, and slice of cake/ham with a cake knife, or cake spatula.
- Add “peas” and “carrots” for additional garnish.
- Serve cake when desired, preferably for dinner as a great joke! Cake is best consumed within 2-3 days and should be kept refrigerated.
