How to Make Rainbow Donuts (Rainbow Doughnuts)

August 22, 2015 by Jenn
In this video tutorial we show you how to make Rainbow doughnuts with our guest host Paityn!  Subscribe to my YouTube channel here: http://goo.gl/tuamEz

Having Paityn around to help bake lately has been so much fun.  Since I’m usually alone in the kitchen, it’s nice having company from time to time.  A kid that is polite, kind and enthusiastic about baking on YouTube is my first choice for a kitchen companion.  She loves being in videos, and everyone is so receptive to her being a guest!

Normally, the type of donuts you would find in a coffee shop, or donut specialty store are sweet fried dough.  These donuts are more like little rounds of cake- which seems fitting for what I like to make best!  Unlike a fried doughnut, each bite of these baked ones is soft and fluffy.  Without the glaze though, the donuts wouldn’t be complete- you’ve got to make sure you smother the donut in layers of bright, beautiful colours of glaze.

Here in Canada, the top donut chain is definitely Tim Hortons, but these rival the best donuts to ever come out of that place.  If rainbows don’t taste good, I don’t know what does.

Ingredients:

  • Donut Batter (recipe here)
  • Donut Glaze (recipe here)
  • Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple gel paste
  • Donut pan (get it here http://amzn.to/1MBZu3P)

Rainbow Doughnuts

Procedure:
  1. Preheat oven to 350F.  Grease and prepare donut pan.
  2. Prepare donut batter and separate into six different small bowls.
  3. Add a couple of drops of red gel paste to one bowl, orange to the second, yellow to the third, green to the forth, blue to the fifth, and purple to the sixth. Mix until no white streaks remain.  Place each coloured batter into a piping bag.
  4. Cut a small piece off the end of the bags, and carefully fill each of the donut cavities 3/4 full with each of the colours of batter.
  5. Place into the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.  Place donuts on a cooling rack and cool completely.
  6. Prepare glaze and separate into six different small bowls.
  7. Add a couple of drops of red gel paste to one bowl, orange to the second, yellow to the third, green to the forth, blue to the fifth, and purple to the sixth. Mix until no white streaks remain.  Place each coloured glaze into a piping bag.
  8. Snip a small piece off the end of each piping bag filled with glaze and cover donuts in stripes of coloured glazes. Transfer donuts to a wire rack and let set for 5 minutes.
  9. Serve immediately, or donuts can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days, but are best served fresh.
