I’m becoming obsessed with food that looks like other food- specifically cupcakes and cake that look like savory food! I even took all of our recipes that are on YouTube and made a special playlist for them. You can watch it here.
When it comes to creating food that looks like other food, you have to bit of running around looking for the best candies that will do the job as impostors. To get everything for this recipe, I probably went to three or four different stores to find everything- it has to be just right!
For the salsa, I tried a couple of different ways to make it, but what I found was that adding in the red and white chunks gave it the best appearance as true salsa, as without it, it just looked like jam. The chocolate covered jelly beans were an easy match, as they look exactly like black beans! The green tubes work well for green onions, but what I really wanted to find, and couldn’t, was a jalapeno like candy. If you’ve got any suggestions for that, let me know in the comments so I can let others know too! My favourite candy topping is the olives. I’m not a huge black licorice fan, but I can tolerate it. Besides, with something like this, you can take all the pieces off that you don’t want to eat.
Back in University days, I used to make these tortilla chips for pot luck parties. They were cheap, and easy! Adding the dusting of cinnamon sugar makes them delicious too.
