I bought myself a Nintendo for Christmas. Guess what game I wanted to play first? Minecraft! Well, that’s a lie. It was vintage Super Mario, but that doesn’t go with this cake. Guess what game I wanted to play second? Minecraft!
Once, many moons ago, I made a grass block Minecraft cake, and that took such a ridiculous amount of time, that I decided I would never do it again. So when I thought about making another Minecraft cake, I chose to make this cake out of mini cake blocks instead of one big giant one. Both giant block cakes, and Minecraft landscape cakes have been created in wonderful ways already all over the internet. So my problem was how was I going to produce a fresh cake idea when I was late to the party? I decided (with Paul’s expert advice . . aka his idea) to go with a background/backdrop of the cake being an un-mined, yet to be explored area that Minecraft Steve is working on, and in front of him, an area of land where he has already been, therefore exposing the various different block types.
Choosing the type of block material is pretty much up to you, but I decided to go with Oreo Marshmallow cubes for bedrock or other stone block, brownies for coarse dirt or granite, blondie cubes for sand blocks and jello cubes for water blocks. These are all pretty flexible ideas and by playing with colours, or add-ins, you could make different types of blocks. I found this template of the various types of Minecraft blocks to be helpful.
Minecraft Cake
Ingredients:
- 2- 12″ X 18″ cakes
- chocolate buttercream
- green vanilla buttercream
- prepared blonde brownie bars
- prepared oreo marshmallow bars
- prepared brownies (with and without nuts)
- prepared blue Jello
- Cut each batch of bars and jello into 1″ sized squares. Set aside.
- Cover one 12″x 18″ cake in chocolate buttercream on top of a solid cake board.
- Having the second slab cake frozen helps with the next step, which is to cut it length wise into 2″ wide strips. Stack these strips on top of each other, along the back of the cake. Cover the stack entirely in chocolate buttercream.
- Stacking up the blocks (1″ cubes) can be done in any pattern/order that you choose. I placed the oreo cubes (bedrock or other stone block) on one side of the mined area, the brownies (coarse dirt or granite) on the other side. The blondie cubes (sand blocks) and jello cubes (water blocks) were focused around the center, middle of the cake board.
- Finish cake with green buttercream grass, from a piping bag fitted with a grass tip, Wilton 233, on some of the brownie blocks.
- On top of the cake layers at the back of the cake (the un-mined area), sprinkle spoonfuls of graham cracker crumbs and oreo crumbs as a layer of dirt on top. Add more grass on top of the crumbs, and to the border of the cake, if desired.
- Add Minecraft figurines to complete the cake.
- The cake is best consumed within 2-3 days.
