We’re back!! We took a short break to recover from the excitement of 2014, and will be slowly getting back into the swing of things this month. To start off with our first video upload of 2015, I have a super fun 3D nail polish bottle cake to show you. I’ve recieved many requests for this type of a cake, so I’m happy to finally be able to bring it to life.
If you’ve been watching my YouTube channel for a while, you know that I always have my nails done. Some days are better than others, but they’re polished 99% of the time. Don’t check my old videos out though . . . I prove myself wrong in those. Teaming up with a fellow YouTuber for nail polish bottle cake was a must for me! One of the channels that I have been watching for quite sometime for nail art ideas, is IHaveACupcake! What a perfect name for a collaboration! Elizabeth has a fabulous channel full of beautiful nail art ideas. She explains everything so simply, that it makes me think I could actually do my nails myself! Make sure you check out her channel, subscribe to it, and you can also check her blog out here.
In Elizabeth’s video, she shows you how to make cupcake nail art and in mine, we show you how to make a carved nail polish bottle. You can follow the technique that I show you in the video to match your favourite nail polish brand. I just happen to have a lot of OPI bottles around, so I chose to go with that type of bottle. Customizing the nail polish bottle colour is totally up to you, and I went with purple as it’s my favourite colour.
Nail Polish Bottle Cake
Ingredients
- 3 x 6″ round cake
- 5 cupcakes
- Coloured buttercream (I used purple)
- Black buttercream
- Black fondant
Additional supplies
- letter cutters (get them here: http://amzn.to/1xNTm1C)
- paint brush (approximately 10″ long)
- piping bag and small round tip
Procedure:
- Stack the 3 cakes one on top of each other, and apply a thin layer of buttercream in between each cake layer.
- Place cake in freezer to solidify to enable easier carving.
- Once cake is frozen, you can begin to carve. Using a serrated knife, carve a small downward sloping section off of the top outer edge of the cake.
- From the bottom of the cake, where it meets the cake board, carve out a downward facing slope, that gently angles up toward the middle of the bottle. Once the cake is shaped, carve off any rough or angled sections that aren’t needed.
- Cover cake in coloured buttercream using a cake spatula.
- Attach an upside down, leveled cupcake in the middle of the top of the bottle. Using the coloured buttercream, and a small round tip, pipe the “thread” of the bottle onto the cupcake. Put cake in the fridge to set again if desired.
- For the handle, level and stack together 4 cupcakes. Cover in black buttercream. If desired you can use skewers or dowels to secure the cupcakes together.
- Using letter cutters, cut out OPI NAIL LACQUER and place onto the front of the cake. In between the O and P is a small dot, so cut one of those out as well, and repeat for between the P and I as well. Cut out a 4″ long, thin strip of black fondant for placement between the OPI and NAIL. Repeat for a horizontal strip that is placed below the work LACQUER as well.
- Place the nail polish bottle handle (black cupcakes) onto the cake board in front of the nail polish bottle. Using the coloured buttercream, pipe a “spill” onto the board.
- Insert the paint brush into the end of the cupcake “handle” to complete the cake.
- Serve the cake when desired- it is best consumed within 2-3 days, and should be kept in the fridge.
