It’s September 2, and we’re headed back to school! To celebrate, my friend Sarah from Socraftastic, and I decided to make a crayon collab! Over on Socraftastic, Sarah is going to show you how to make Crayon Lipstick! Here, I’m doing a Crayon Cake demonstration.
I got to meet Sarah a year ago when we were both chosen to participate in a creator program that YouTube was running at YouTube Space LA. She is one of the sweetest girls you’ll ever meet, and she is incredibly talented! I’m so lucky she let me join her in this Back To School video! Make sure you head over to her channel and subscriber to her.
The only “challenging” part of making this cake is getting the correct colours, and the piping of straight lines. I had to do a lot of straightening once we were done filming! I have to get better at piping on an angle that the camera demands. That’s a behind the scenes secret you’ve just been told!
To get the correct colours of the Crayola box, I had to go and get a box of crayons to be my subject. You’d think a kindergarten teacher would have crayons in all corners of her house, but not me! In my opinion, there is not a perfect science to matching colours. Along the way, you start to learn what colour makes what, but it’s mostly a lot of experimentation. To match the orangey yellow buttercream of the Crayola box, I used mostly yellow gel paste, and a few drops of orange gel paste until the colour was a match against the box. To make the dark green, I used regular green gel paste, and added drops of black until I had the dark colour. You could get away with making yours with a bit less black than I did though, as it looks really dark against the yellow contrast.
Crayon Cake
Ingredients:
- 9″ x 13″ double layered cake covered in yellowy orange buttercream
- White, yellow, dark green, bright green, red buttercream
- Six mini ice cream cones (I found mine at WalMart)
- Six different coloured melting wafers
- Crayola template
- Prepare buttercream covered cake on a cake board.
- Using the dark green buttercream fitted with a #3 tip, pipe an triangle shape on the side of the cake about 4 inches up from the base. Fill that area in from the top of the triangle, to the bottom of the cake.
- Continuing with the dark green buttercream, from where the triangle meets the edge of the top of the cake, pipe a straight line to the bottom of the cake, about 2 inches from the bottom outer corner. Fill that area in with the dark green buttercream. Repeat on the other side of the cake.
- Using the bright green buttercream fitted with a #3 tip, follow the triangle shape and pipe a bright green 1 inch thick area on top of the dark green one. Fill in the area with the bright green. Continue the bright green area across and over the front of the cake, stopping at the base of the cake. Pipe two thin lines following the arrow shape on the side of the cake, and along the front lower bottom corner area, leaving half an inch of space between the triangle, and each line. Repeat on opposite side of the cake.
- Using the Crayola logo, use the bright green to pipe the logo onto the front of the cake, near the top. Fill in the letters with the green. Outline the logo with the bright yellow, using a #3 tip.
- Pipe the Crayons logo using the white buttercream fitted with a #10 tip. Outline the Crayons logo with the red buttercream fitted with a #3 tip.
- Using the green buttercream pipe the top of the box, onto the cake board, but extending the sides up by approximately 4″ and joining them in a rectangle. Fill in the area on the cake board with buttercream.
- To make the crayons, dip the mini ice cream cones into melted chocolate and set them to dry on a piece of parchment paper. Repeat for all colours of chocolate.
- Once the crayons are dried, attach them to the top of the cake, using a swab of buttercream.
- Serve when ready, or store in a sealed container for 2-3 days.
