Rainbow Cupcakes in a Jar: How to Make

July 24, 2013 by Jenn

In this video, I show you how to make your own rainbow cupcakes in a jar!  I love the idea of these, and anything rainbow for that matter.  They are super fun to make, if you like dirty dishes–you end up with a ton whenever you bake “rainbow”.  You’ll need to find yourself some canning jars for this project.  I got mine at Target, and I’ve seen them available at many other box stores . . . and even in grocery stores, especially during canning season.

I’ve gotten many questions from viewers regarding “How do I eat it?”  I thought that was self explanatory, but apparently not!  Well, you take a spoon and dig right in!  The cake to icing ratio is high on the cake side, but you’re bound to be able to look passed that with how cute these are!

Items used in this rainbow cupcakes recipe:
– Cake batter
– Icing/Frosting
– Gel paste color (we use AmeriColor)

Rainbow cupcakes in a jar

The first thing you’re going to need to do is prepare your vanilla cake batter, separate into six different bowls, and colour them separately, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.  Next, put each cake batter amount into a separate piping bag (or sealable bag), and cut the tip off.  Starting with the purple, squeeze a small amount of batter to cover the bottom of the jar.  Next, do the same with the blue, enough to cover the purple.  Repeat with all of the colours.  You want the jar to be about 1/2 to 2/3 full when you’ve put all of the batter into the jars.

Using a water bath, a cake pan with 1/2″ of water in the bottom, place the jars into the pan.  The water bath with help minimize the browning of the cake batter against the side of the jar. You do not have to use it.  Bake in the oven 350F  until a toothpick inserted comes out clean, about 30mins.

Ice and decorate as desired . . . and serve with a spoon, so people know how to eat it!

Happy Baking!

Hi there…they are both linked in the post in the ingredient’s section. If you can’t find it, just look for the vanilla cake recipe in the recipe tab.
