Minecraft Cake

January 12, 2013 by Jenn

Minecraft is one of the most popular games going right now.  To play this game you place blocks and build anything you want!  I researched that, yo.  I had no idea what Minecraft was when I first heard the name.  And after telling people about the cake I was working on, I learned I was not alone.  Who are the people making this game popular?  I know exactly who . . . the YOUNG!  Unfortunately, I am not in that age category anymore.  I’m not my Grandma old (98), but apparently, neither am I young, or hip.

This cake was one of the most time consuming cakes I have ever undertook.  Actually, I think it can claim first prize.  From start to finish, it took me around 20 hours to complete this cake.  I can’t believe my short attention span lasted that long!  The construction of the cake is not technically difficult, it is simply very time consuming.

The first step was to make the 1,620 one centimeter by one centimeter squares.  1,620!  I ended up with a couple dozen left over, but that was better than being short a couple!  I used a mixture of gum paste and fondant to make the squares, and used a french fry cutter blade to cut out multiple squares at a time.  I let them dry and harden over a couple of days.

After I had all of the squares cut out . . . which took about ten of the twenty hours, it was time to carve the cake.  This cake in particular was a dense chocolate cake, filled with salted caramel buttercream.  I wanted to use a heavy cake for this one to ensure that it would hold up during the carving and construction process.

Cutting the cake perfectly square was essential.  I wanted it to be a PERFECT 9″ cube.  So, using a (clean, brand new) metal square, I measured, sketched the cut lines, lined them up, and using the GIANT cake carving knife, I started carving.

After the cube of cake was carved, I went about icing it.  I thought this step would be incredibly hard, but it ended up being surprising easy.  I referred to the metal square to make sure that I was icing evenly, and in relative short time, it was covered.

The first line of the tiles was essential to ensuring that the cube remained perfectly square.  I carefully lined the first row up and just went from there, working my way down.

Finishing this cake was one of my happiest moments.  I knew it looked awesome . . . and I was incredibly happy to be finished!

The little guy on top is called a Creeper.  I made it out of solid gum paste, and then used coloured buttercream to create the “pixelation”.  Using a wood skewer, I pushing it into the (very solid) cake.

If you’re about to take on the task of making a cake like this, make sure you give yourself plenty of time!  It’s pretty simple when you think about it, it just takes a long time.

What an amazing cake! What was the size of the cake before you added the fondant? I am just trying to work out dimensions. If the squares are 1 cm x 1 cm and there are are 18 x 18 x 18 actual squares, this gives me a total of a 7 inch cube… I can’t work out how you get to 9 a inch square …… but then my maths is not the best!! 🙂

    Hi Jenn,

This cake is AMAZING! My nephew wants a minecraft creeper cake for his birthday party, which has now turned into an adult excuse to party – hence there will be a lot of people to feed! I am not a professional baker though I have worked with fondant before. I’m probably going to use a 50:50 fondant to gum paste ratio. For a cake of this size and the amount of squares you cut out, about how much will I need of each? And is it too early begin rolling & cutting 5 or 6 days before the party? I want to make sure the squares dry but not become inedible. Thank you so much!!!

I don’t remember exactly how much fondant I used, but I made quite a bit of each colour to start with as I didn’t want to have to play a matching game later on, and try to match the initial shade I had coloured. I started on the monday making the squares, and the cake was delivered on a saturday.

And my 3rd question is I will like to add the sword on the top how do I do it should I do the cut out in cardboard then add the fondant or should I use fondant let it try for 2 week then add the squares to the cake I really need help ty so much

Using a small amount of shortening in replace of an equal amount of butter works to help stabilize the icing in the heat. I don’t know about working with ganache as an icing, sorry. You can make the sword either way…they both sound great.

Hi there. This cake looks amazing and my son wants this cake for his birthday. I just need to know, what fry cutter did you use. Was it an actual machine or just a blade? Please help. Maybe you can tell me what model or brand you used. Thanks in advance. Any help is appreciated.

Hi! I have another question as I’m about to begin making this cake! After the cake is complete can it be refrigerated? Or will that affect the fondant/gumpaste?

    • Jenn says
      February 1, 2014 at 9:59 pm

Yes, it’s fine to place in the fridge after the fondant is on.

Combining the two makes for a harder product.

Yes I froze the cake to solidify it…it helps when carving. You can thaw it out before covering if you wish, but I didn’t.

    Hey 🙂

I just started watching your videos today! I would love to be that talented. I’ve made a few cakes and different designs, but I would love to know if you have a video on making a game controller or one of the many game systems from Play Station. My brother loves video games and he plays Minecraft so I was thinking about doing this cake but I only have a week till his birthday so maybe something a little less time consuming. Also I would only need a small cake it would only be like 3 people eating it so I wouldn’t need to make that large of a cake.

    Thank you, Ashley 😀

Good morning! I’m going to make an attempt at this type of cake for my son’s birthday party. If I start with squares tonight (Wednesday), do you think it would be even possible to get it done by Friday? I’ll be having a party also next week with the rest of the family, so I could potentially finish it for then. I’ve never worked with fondant/gel paste before, so maybe I’ll adapt the pattern so it’s not such a big cube, but rather small cubes of cake layered in a sort of scene. I haven’t figured out how much cursing I want the people around me to hear yet. 🙂 Either way, this cake is fabulous!

    • jessie says
      July 5, 2014 at 10:21 pm

you can get it finished by then but you would have to start a little early.
for the fondant, you can buy buckets at a bakery supply store and you just roll it out and cut it into squares

I LOVE this. Preparing to get started on making this cake for my son’s birthday next week! I hope it turns out as awesome as yours!! Mind if I ask a couple questions?? What size cake pan did you start out with for the cakes? Since you let the tiles dry and harden, were they edible or did they get peeled off to eat the cake? How many people would the 9″ cube cake feed?

    Thanks!!

    • Jenn says
      June 18, 2013 at 2:23 pm

Hi Heather….if I recall correctly, I believe I made the cakes in 8″ square pans. I didn’t eat the cake so I don’t know what happened after delivery. The tiles would have been edible, but I doubt that they would have eaten them. The 9″ square would feed a TON of people…the cake is HUGE!

Hi there…I just used different amounts of green and brown Americolor gel pastes. I started with a small amount, and then when I was finished with the light, I would add more colour and start the next set of squares. I roughly followed the actual minecraft block (found an image on google).
