About Me

My blog and YouTube channel is about anything and everything related to do-it-yourself baking from scratch, and decorating cakes and cupcakes.  We also balance it out with some hiking trips mixed in for a well rounded lifestyle!  I try to respond to as many questions and comments as I can, so leave me one, and I’ll get back to you!

FAQ’s

What kind of dog is Ruby?

She is a Pug/Brussel Griffon cross and has the sweetest temperament.  Look for her in our Backpacking videos.

What do you do with everything that you make?

We give it away to friends, family and coworkers.

What camera do you film with?

We actually shoot with two cameras.  A Nikon D750, in our newer videos, and a Nikon D7000 in the older ones, as well as a secondary shot Cannon XA20.

What’s been your biggest accomplishment in life thus far?

That is a hard question to answer (ask yourself what you would say?), but I would have to say that I am very proud of myself for getting a teaching job at a great school, moving to London (when I was too young to know better) and living there for a year.  It was the highlight of my life so far-an amazing experience all around Europe  and the Middle East.

What kind of mixer do you have?

A KitchenAid Stand Mixer Classic, in black, the KA Artisan in Cinnamon and the KA Pro Series 5 in silver.

What’s your favorite comfort food?

Anything loaded with carbs.  I’m such a carb girl, it’s gross.  Pasta, bread, buns, naan.  I could eat bowl after bowl of pasta (especially fresh) until I would be so fat, I wouldn’t be able to move.  I don’t really like vegetables, though I do get the odd craving for salads once and a while (it has to be full of cheese, protein and nuts though).

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be doing?

A full time YouTuber!

How did you decide what grade to teach? Did you ever consider grades other than Kindergarten?

When I started out teaching, I would have taken ANY grade that I was offered, but when I finally settled into my continuing contract, it was in Kindergarten, and I love it there.  I have taught a grade one, a one/two, a two/three and subbed at many other levels, but Kindergarten is where the fun is at!

What is your favourite cake?

Do I have to only pick one?  My favourite is Angel Food.  I LOVE the crusty edges the most.  Other than Angel Food, I don’t really like cake.  GASP!  I like the icing.  The icing is where it’s at . . . especially peanut butter icing.

What’s your favourite movie?

When I was a kid, my favourite movie was Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, as a teenager it was Clueless, in my 20’s it was Fight Club, now, I would have to say it is Julie and Julia!

What’s your favorite thing to do to “wind down” before bed?

I like to catch up on my blog reading, pin like a mad woman or read a good book.

Do you have a question?

Please email or send a message if you have any questions, or suggestions for me . . . I’m looking for advice people! Bring it on!!

Enjoy….

Hi, I’m Liat, I’m 13 and I live in New York. I love your videos and I watch them over and over again. I love baking and cooking. I’m thinking about being a baker pat-time when I’m older. I have some suggestions for cakes and cookies I would like to see in the future. I am a dancer so I was hoping you could make ballerina cookies or a dancer cake of some kind. I would also love to see a YouTube cake with the play button and maybe some other things related to YouTube. I can’t wait to see more videos!

Hi! I place parchment paper in between layers of cookies and freeze them in a sealed container. You can freeze decorated ones too, but make sure the icing has hardened before trying to stack them.

Hello let me first say that my daughters and I love your videos. Can you possibly include an estimate of how much the recipe should make on the cupcake ones. I find it a little hard to plan to make them when I’m unsure what the yield should be. Thanks in advance! Can’t wait for your next video.

Hi, Jenn. What is the name and brand of those adjustable measuring cups you use? The ones that neatly push out sticky ingredients like caramel sauce? And are they easy to hand-wash? I want to get some, but not using the trial-and-error method. 🙂

I messaged before Three King’s Day asking if you could do a King Cake and you responded that you plan your cakes a couple months in advance and are unaware of the holiday. Three Kings Day is the 6th of January each year, so almost two months out. I am including a link to explain how Three King’s Day is the beginning of Carnival season (think Mardi Gras in New Orleans). What do you think?

Hi Jenn. I used your recipe for the vanilla cake. As I said previously, they leafs were not pronounced in the vanilla batter, and some fell over. Upon removing the red cake from the freezer and stamping out the leafs, I placed them tightly in the proper formation. I used a three inch maple leaf cutter. Should i use a larger cutter?

I would use the largest cutter you can, that will still fit in the pan.

Hi Jenn. I made your Canada Day flag cake for my Canada Day party. The problem I had was that the red flags did not some out properly in the white part of the cake. I did as directed in your tutorial. I froze the red part and then cut out the maple leafs, and then inserted in the white batter. Also the red leafs fell to one side. Any tips, suggestions? I will definitely make this cake again!! Mary

Sorry to hear that you had some difficulty. They shouldn’t have been able to fall, as they should have been in there tightly (pressed together). Did you use a heavy batter or a box mix? That might have been an issue too.

Most things last in the freezer for 1-2 months. I haven’t frozen these though so I’m not totally sure how it will work, but my guess would be that it should be fine.

My recipe says just use confection sugar but it gets clumpy and nasty in one day.So I was thinking mixed with the rice flour that should solve my problem. Would you help me out. Thanks Catherine.

I only use icing sugar to coat the marshmallows, and have never had any problems with it getting “clumpy or nasty”. I suspect there might be something wrong with your marshmallows if that is happening??

    Dear Jenn,
My daughter Brigid adores you and your videos. She’s 7, and with all the junk she can be watching, it is so refreshing that you are the video she wants to watch before bed, when she gets up in the morning, when she’s sick, when she’s bored. You get the point. So congrats on a job well-done for inspiring old and young alike, that with creativity, anything and everything can be fun. Now if I could only figure out how to make your zebra cake, I will be Brigid’s hero!

My daughter’s third birthday is next week, and I am making her a “Jenn Cake” because she has been OBSESSED with your YouTube channel for the past six months. In her bath, she requests a spatula, then smooths the bubbles across her foam blocks while saying, “I’m just going to sp’wead ‘dis c’wumb coat, and I’ll be back when it’s all cover’.” I ask her what she’s pretending her playdough to be, and the answer is ALWAYS, ‘butterc’weam!”. It’s just precious. Anyways, came to your site to find a recipe for her birthday cake, and thought I’d share the cuteness!! Have a great day….

    Hi there 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing all of your recipes and tutorials. You truly are very inspiring.
I made your zebra cake for my daughter’s 18th birthday just this weekend. Everyone was so impressed with it and I was too (for a first attempt) but it was nowhere near as clean looking as yours. The black fondant zebra stripes weeped into the buttercream slightly. I’m wondering if there is something I could do next time to prevent this happening again. Is there anything you can think of that might help?
    Thanks again,
    Kind regards,
    Kylie

Maybe putting them on just before you served the cake?? That way they wouldn’t have time to weep. I use Satin Ice fondant, and my buttercream isn’t wet….if you tried that, it might work too??

Since I discovered your You Tube cake lessons I love watching and follow some like your Easy Vanilla Cake recipe.
I do have a question to you, is that your recipe too in all your vanilla cupcakes? I love the fluffiness and moistness and lightness overall its one almost perfect criteria for a Vanilla cupcake! You’re an inspiration to a person like me who only wants to bake and share to other people too. Thanks Jenn for your reply . God bless you and your love ones. Bye

My 5 and 3 year old daughters are obsessed with your channel! While researching cakes to make for my baby’s 1st birthday, they were telling me “use a Wilton grass tip to get that desired effect!” Thanks for giving such great tips and explaining everything in your videos so thoroughly. I was wondering if you had a list of must have tools for beginning baking as a hobby? You had a ton of things in your fondant tutorial and I am not sure what a good start would be. Thank you in advance!

Oh my gosh, that’s adorable!!! Thanks so much for telling me 🙂 Made my day. I don’t have a specific list that I have put together (maybe I should)! A mat, rolling pin, rolling cutter, and the tools are definitely something that I pull out no matter what I’m making with fondant. Specific cutters are something that you kind of acquire along the way 🙂

Hey! I just wanted to say you inspire me to never give up and to express yourself. I think your YouTube channel has become a huge success. I am so glad you made it.
I think you should make a butterfly cake. that would be really cool.

My ten year-old, Magnolia, loves your YouTube channel and is showing me all your videos. I love your accent (I miss Canada and need to visit soon!)

Maggie is super excited to read you’re a kindergarten teacher and a fitness instructor (“She’s even more my hero now!”).

Take care and have an amazing 2015!

LOVE your blog/channel!! It really shows me how all these great looking complicated things are things that I can actually make. Kinda makes me wish I lived in Canada so I could support your bakery…actually that you lived in Chicago. I couldn’t give up Home Run Inn or Portillo’s.

Now that we are past all the Christmas craziness and Three King’s Day is approaching, I’m wondering have you ever made a King Cake? The only places I can find are located in New Orleans and since they only make them for the Carnival season, I’m unable to get one shipped in time for Three King’s Day (06Jan).

I’ve found a few recipes online but I’m allergic to nuts so I’d prefer a plain and not praline. I’m REALLY hesitant to try making it because I’m worried I’ll melt the baby:( Can you please try and show me how? Also if you can ship to Chi, I will buy one from you:)

PS I also thought it would be really cool if instead of purple, green and gold sprinkles on top, you dyed the dough! Just a thought:D

Thanks for your suggestion! I’ve never heard of that kind of cake, nor the celebration associated with it. My cakes are planned months ahead of time, so unfortunately I won’t be able to look into this one for you. Thanks for watching.

Hi my name is Sydney and I love to watch your you-tube videos! I have a question for you. Can you do a gluten free cake or something because I always watch your videos with my little sister and she cant have anything anymore and Christmas is coming up and we always have a giant cake and cupcakes to but she wont be able to have it so I was wondering if you cloud make a gluten free cake or cupcake so I can make it for my sister as a surprise.

    Thank you,
    Sydney
