Fortunate Friday

April 23, 2011 by Jenn

Let’s get going . . . I only have 40 more minutes while it’s still Friday!

I am fortunate for the gift of time.  The long weekend started today and it has been a great start so far!  We have been working hard all day, making cupcakes, cakes and doing a bridal consultation . . . and packing!  Moving is such a hassle!

I am fortunate that neither Paul, nor I killed each other last night, as we worked on our latest cake until 3:00.  In the A.M!  Good lord that was a long, tough one, but our customer was happy, and that’s all that matters!

I am fortunate that tomorrow my mom and Paul are coming to help me pack up my stuff.  I seriously was starting to hyperventilate when I was thinking about moving.  You never know how much stuff you actually have until it all has to fit into boxes!  I’m living in a 500 square foot loft, and we’ve already taken three truck loads to Paul’s basement, and I’m calling in reinforcements tomorrow!

I am fortunate to have had the baking bug this week, and made two new recipes . . . Chocolate Cadbury Creme Egg Cupcake, and a Mocha Cupcake.  Both of them are so delicious!

I am fortunate that we live in a country where we have a thing called “Pitch In” and people actually care that it is Earth Day today.  We had the kids at school, picking up garbage in and around the school grounds.  It was great to see, and hopefully we kick the litter-bug problem sometime soon.  My dad used to blow up a HUGE Earth Day ball, and roll it around the EK10K route with the kids in his class.  Why don’t we do those kind of things anymore?

Happy Earth Day!

Pride and Joy

April 20, 2011 by Jenn

My pride and joy is my blog and baking.  Some may say children are supposed to be, but I get my fulfillment teaching others’ children.  I don’t know how my parents did it . . . raising children and teaching!  One or the other, please.  RIght now, it looks like it’s teaching . . . and blogging and baking!

I have totally been neglecting my blog in the last couple of months, and haven’t been able to tell as many stories as I like to . . . or as many cardio posts (hmm, I think I have mentioned that a number of times!)   I think of CCC as a way to express how I’m feeling at any given moment,  what is going on in my world, or the latest recipe I stumbled upon and recreated.  I am leading a very busy life at the moment, but one of my friends pointed out on the weekend that I “function very well when scheduled”.  She was right, but of course it’s all within reason.  Who needs sleep!?!

I love schedules.  If I could be a professional scheduler, I would be!  What has been difficult as of late, has been learning to schedule a NEW responsibility into my already busy schedule . . . JJ’s Custom Cakery.  Obviously (to everyone else) I am going to need to give up some of my “jobs”, but that is a hard pill to swallow for someone obsessed with scheduling.

My gut reaction to fight this sensible notion of “giving something up” and replace it with “NO, I CAN DO IT ALL!”  but, I’m learning I can’t.  Emotionally it leads to breakdowns, it leads to lack of sleep, it leads to a poor memory (which I kind of need for teaching and baking . . . baking powder does NOT do the same work that baking soda does!) and it leads to a complete lack of a social life (thank god Paul is liking caking).  I can’t forget to mention how “doing it all” severely affects my TV watching schedule!  Oh the shame, the shame.

As I set out in this next journey with a new business, I am so excited to see what lays ahead.  Scared at the same time, but excited about what might be.  Everyday a new opportunity may come my way, and  new excitement can begin to build, one order at a time.

Sun . . . oh, it’s so nice to see you again!  Keep on shining . . . I beg you.

Victoria. . . almost there!  Can’t wait to see my “chosen” friends.  We go all the way back to our days in University, and we have managed to meet up every year since then, whether it be in Victoria, Penticton, Hawaii, Cranbrook, Calgary, or Vancouver.  Love you girls xoxoxx

Cupcakes.  Need I say more?

Paul . . . not only is this man a marketing genius, he can carve a mean truck cake!  His “first” cake is absolutely amazing and I will post pics soon.  I’m so proud of him, and I am so glad that I have his tools in my arsenal.

My health . . . I have a healthy heart, two healthy legs, two healthy arms . . . and two healthy boobs.  Thinking of my friend Geneva today <3  . . . and I’m working on a healthy mind!

Happy Friday.  Enjoy it, wherever you are.

Fortunate Friday

April 1, 2011 by Jenn

I know, I know, I know . . . I have not posted all week! Grrrrrr . . . I simply have not had time.   I have been so busy baking, that I need to extend the number of hours in the day.  Hello, blog . . . nice to see you again.  I’ve missed you CCC.

On to the “Fortunes” . . .

I am fortunate to be so busy with baking orders. I will soon learn how to juggle everything and will be back to my blogging glory! I am planning to sit on my a$$ on Sunday and blog, blog, blog! Pictures need to be uploaded to my Facebook page (if you haven’t become a fan, please do so!), I need to figure out which delicious treats I will be making for our April specials (how does a Cadbury Creme Egg Cupcake sound to you?), I need to investigate gluten-free recipes for a couple of potenial customers and one for sure bride!

I am fortunate to have forgiving friends and family who will no longer be able to see me on a regular basis.  If anyone needs me, I’ll be in my kitchen.

While we’re on the topic of kitchens, I am fortunate to have found a new kitchen to fill my cake stuff with!  My dear friend Gretchen’s parents (are better people than), are heading out volunteering for the next couple of years and I am going to move into their house to keep it warm until they get back!  With the successful amount of baking that is going on, I have outgrown my beautiful, yet tiny, one bedroom loft.  I cannot wait to fill up the FOUR bedrooms of the new house!

Have a great weekend everyone 🙂

Fortunate Friday

March 5, 2011 by Jenn

Isn’t it interesting how life is going in one direction one day, and then you suddenly see yourself heading in a different one?  I feel this has happened with the evolution of my blog.

I started Cookies, Cupcakes, and Cardio in October of 2010 (it’s just an infant!) and I wanted to share my love for baking, and combine it with the healthy lifestyle choice of spinning (and other cardio).  I love my job teaching at the gym, and I appreciate each and every person that come to my classes.  Lately, posting cardio components has dwindled away . . . to nothingness 🙁  sorry.  I will get back to it this weekend!

I am fortunate that people are still reading my blog despite the lack of recent cardio components!

I have found myself down the path of altering my blog.  I love blogging, but starting a business in a small town, I am mixed about sharing complete recipes!  What if my “competition” reads my recipes, and “steals” them?  Is that serious concern?  I have no idea!  I have always been skeptical of others, not necessarily a trusting person, and I don’t know what to do about sharing completed recipes.

Upon many thoughts about this, I have decided to offer pictorial sessions of my baking and share recipes that are not for sale by JJ’s Custom Cakery.  I hope that this doesn’t annoy too many people!  If it does, please email me, and I will send you the recipe that you are looking for.  I started this blog to share and learn, and I want that to continue that in some way.

I am fortunate that I have gradually found myself going down a road I never thought I’d be on.

I am fortunate that I have a dilemma regarding what to do regarding sharing recipes, because it means I have started out successfully!

The ABC’s of CCC

February 27, 2011 by Jenn
Are you one of those people who is seriously annoyed when someone sends you an email that asks your favourite colour, favourite number, pepsi or coke, favourite position?

Well, if you are, this post is NOT for you!  But, if you are excited when you get one of those emails, and rather than thinking “What loser has time to fill in one of these things?“, you stop working immediately, and fill it in, and spam it out to ALL your friends, then this post is for you!

Feel free to cut and paste, and email (spam) it out . . . only to those who will appreciate the fun though!

The ABC’s of CCC

B. Bed size: Queen . . . but it’s not big enough for me . . . I want a King!  Mostly so I can sleep sideways, partly because cupcakes make you gain weight.

C. Chore you hate:  All.  I hate cleaning.  And tidying.  And organizing.  And filing.  And scrubbing.  And dusting.  And dishes.

Fortunate Friday

February 25, 2011 by Jenn

The end of another week has come!  I am starting to LOVE “having” to end my week with a Fortunate Friday post.  I say “having” to end my week because, hey, it’s MY blog, I’m in charge of this Mechanical baby!

Mechanical baby= blog.  Fur baby= Ruby dog.  Real baby= disaster.

I’m fortunate for my recent financial successes from the Cakery business, as my car bill this week was $600!  WTF!  For a tune up!  I need to switch brands.

I’m fortunate for Paul and my partnership with Jenn’s Custom Cakery, as he’s working on a new site as we speak.  Or at least he better be!  🙂

I’m fortunate to be in Vancouver again this weekend, representing the BC Primary Teachers’ at the BCTF’s New Teacher’s Conference.  Gretchen and I are presenting on Saturday afternoon, and we will soon be taking over the world after that.

I’m fortunate to be in Vancouver because it’s -32 in Cranbrook.  Enough said.
