{"id":4012,"date":"2013-06-24T01:10:07","date_gmt":"2013-06-24T01:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cookiescupcakesandcardio.com\/?p=4012"},"modified":"2015-12-09T03:04:26","modified_gmt":"2015-12-09T03:04:26","slug":"how-to-make-a-rainbow-cake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cookiescupcakesandcardio.co\/?p=4012","title":{"rendered":"How to Make a Rainbow Cake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is one of my most favourite cakes that I have made to date.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen dozens of different versions of this prior to making it, so I wanted to make sure that I put my own spin on the outside of the cake in order to set it apart from the others!\u00a0 To do this, I used the &#8220;petal&#8221; technique and I hope you love it as much as I do!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IIFvp4ud8Ng\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more--> <span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>\u00a0Rainbow Cake<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>This is a large 8 inch (20 centimeter) round and 8 inch (20 centimeter) high cake. It will serve around 16-20 people.<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ingredients:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">2 batches <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/XaNELscDtms\" target=\"_blank\">vanilla cake<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">2-3 batches of <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/rjqOTM5icOE\" target=\"_blank\">vanilla buttercream<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Gel Paste: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Six 12 inch piping bags<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">large round tip (Ateco 809 or Wilton 1A or equivalent)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cookiescupcakesandcardio.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/DSC_6104web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4014\" title=\"Rainbow cake slice\" src=\"http:\/\/cookiescupcakesandcardio.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/DSC_6104web.jpg\" alt=\"Rainbow cake slice\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cookiescupcakesandcardio.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/DSC_6104web.jpg 600w, http:\/\/cookiescupcakesandcardio.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/DSC_6104web-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Procedure:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Preheat your oven to 350\u02daF\/180\u02daC. \u00a0Grease and prepare six 8 inch (20 centimeter) cake pans. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Prepare the vanilla cake batter. \u00a0Divide the batter into 6 bowls, and colour each one a separate colour using \u00bc- \u00bd teaspoon (1-3 milliliters) of gel paste for each colour. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Bake each coloured cake in the oven for 15-20 minutes and allow to cool completely before levelling. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Prepare the buttercream. \u00a0Leave some of it white for the layers between the cakes, approximately 2-3 cups (240 milliliters- 720 milliliters) and divide the remaining buttercream into 6 bowls, and colour each separately.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The order of colours from bottom to top goes purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red. \u00a0Starting with the base of the cake, place the purple cake layer onto a plate or cake board and use a swipe of buttercream to \u201cglue\u201d the cake to the base. \u00a0Add white buttercream on top of the cake layer using a metal spatula and smooth it out evenly. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On top of the buttercream layer, place the blue cake layer, top with white buttercream and smooth. \u00a0Repeat, alternating between cake layers and buttercream until the final red layer is at the top. \u00a0Once you reach the top of the cake, cover the entire cake in white buttercream. \u00a0Ensure that the cake is straight up and down (not leaning), and place into freezer to solidify the layers of buttercream. \u00a0This will make it easier to decorate without causing the cake to lean.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Petal technique: \u00a0Place purple buttercream in a piping bag fitted with a large round tip, such as Ateco 806, or Wilton 1A. \u00a0To make the petal shape, place the tip about an \u215b inch (\u00bd \u00a0centimeter) away from the side of the cake, squeeze the piping bag, allow the buttercream to \u201cgrow\u201d into a mound, and then pull the bag away from the mound, along the side of the cake, slowly stop squeezing the further away from the mound you get. Line the tip up again where you left off, and repeat the process. \u00a0I started at the base of the cake with the purple buttercream, went around the cake entirely, and then moved up to blue, then green, yellow, orange, and finally red. \u00a0Repeat as many times as necessary to cover the entire cake. \u00a0The same technique is used to cover the top as well.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Slice and serve immediately. \u00a0The cake can be kept in a sealed container in the fridge for 2-3 days.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a
